  • Adding this a bit late - the Rocky Mountain Boroughs 2009 comes close in ability and beats it for pricing. With some black rims, maybe deep-section (my taste, and not very trad) it would look sexy. And everybody agrees with my tastes on sexy. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

I have one of these, and its very good indeed. 1" ahead steerer is a little odd though. Its a good deal at the offer price from Evans, but would baulk at paying rrp for it.

  • @VanUden...You may be onto something there. I suppose if I am ever offered a choice between something sturdy,
and something slender, I'd go for the big hips strength every time.

    I do kill myself. ;)

  • Raysmuckles, post a photo of your bike.....

  • I think the Steamroller is less sporty, but more multi-purpose than the IRO. If I were choosing between the two, it would be the Steamroller.

One must think of winter as well as summer eh?

ok when you say less sporty I reckon you're referring to the angles of the frame. but (pardon my ignorance) has that anything to do with multi-purpose and winter/summer?

Agree. it is much less sporty than the bianci pista which i ride much less than my steamroller which i've been riding come rain or shine, winter and summer for around 5 years. it also looks neat (the black frame that is)

The Steamroller has clearance for big tyres, like the good ones for winter. Check the Winter Tyres list thread for examples.
But obviously it can be set up for very fast commuting, or even sportives, if thats your kind of thing. A very multi-purpose bike.
    Recommended.

  • you sold me! gonna order the frameset today, it's the 2009 model, but I don't really think there are too many differences, are there? the only thing I don't really like is the ahead stem, I just love the look of an old-fashioned quill stem...

  • ^ true quills will always look better than aheads... but I think you warm to them eventually.

Plus they have so many advantages. If you really have to have a quill, you can get a shim for the headtube to put a 1" headset, then it's just a case of getting a 1" threaded fork you like.

Just got to ask yourself whether the hassle, expense, and loss of practicality is worth sacraficing for the look.

  • Ahead stems are better though.

  • and Surly have a 1" steamroller fork too as well.

  • ^ Surly not anymore they don't?

  • ^ fury muff... Friday inability to read properly. I thought you were saying you could still get the SR frame in 1", rather than just the forks... altho the 1" is still threadless... so there's not really any point.

Either way, I wouldn't bother. (1) bc he may as well just keep the ahead setup, (2) he'll have to pay to get them threaded, (3) the SR forks don't look all that anyway.

  • oh well, it's not all that bad with a ahead stem I guess. I'm sure there are some very nice ones out there, I really like these for examle: http://www.velo-orange.com/vost625.html

the only thing I'm worried about is the low BB, the Steamroller has a BB drop of 70mm. I wouldn't want any pedal strike or have my pedal cages scratching on the floor when I'm pushing the bike...

    You can get those genetic stem anywhere, if you want a 'classic' appearance, look no further than the fillet braze Nitto CT-80;

Ride your bike instead of teenslaining it then.

  • ...I wouldn't want any pedal strike or have my pedal cages scratching on the floor when I'm pushing the bike...

    ffs!

This will almost always happen. They're pedal cages, so what if they get scratched? It's nice to have nice looking bike, but you're buying a steamroller!

The way you're going on about this stuff I think you'd have been better off getting a pretty kerin frame instead.

  • ...and then take the bus in winter.

  • jeez lads, give a newbie a break...

  • Ed, you're gold. I didn't even realize i needed this in my life before i saw it here :) cheers.

    Nitto CT-80

  • Shim it?

  • or just buy the one that isn't oversized. You can even see the two in the picture are different

  • Mine's an 25.4 clamp with an 1 1/8 steerer, a bit heavier than an alu but it's defintely quality.

  • i deleted the messages in order to escape the shame :) but thanks guys :) i will look for the appropriate one for my setup

  • Raysmuckles, post a photo of your bike.....

Happy to oblige for the OTP crowd...

The clash inspired tubing decal is a particular favourite...

Also my other stuff that needs 'attending to'

  • DIBS!!!!! (on the Rocky Mountain)

    ;) ;)
