  • ^ doubt it. You get really quite good protection (I think?) if you don't gift it, well worth the money

  • But it also costs one of you 3%(?) in charges, the gift payment only costs £1.50 I think. I bought and paid for a bike via gift recently but it was from rih so it really depends on their track record.

  • You'd have to be a helluva cheapskate to demand gift payment because of the 3% fee. Make me think you're the kind of person who'd also scrimp on the packaging material too..

  • gift for people i know, not if if i don't. Simples.

  • it is 4% and it can become quite much especially if you are selling stuff over 500pounds

  • A £500 purchase would cost an additional £20 in fees.
More than worth it for the protection afforded, when compare to gifting the money.

  • yes if the buyer pays, its fine.

  • The seller should pay the fees. Just factor fees into your asking price.

  • I believe even DK suggests that the buyer should pay if he/she wants the protection. Classifieds rules, suggestions section I think.

Bit dramatic. I paid Rih via gift, bike was extremely well packed and he got it to me from Holland in three days.

Why pay more if you don't need to? I'm not suggesting paying by gift to everyone

  • PayPal Gift payment offers no protection at all. Nor are there any PayPal charges either to Buyer or Seller, associated with such transactions. This service is effectively same as a Bank Transfer, for those who have/use bank accounts. In recent years new banking laws have come into effect which promotes almost instant (same-day) transfers through automated banking systems. Prior to this, Bank Transfers would take 3-5 working days to clear.

A standard, basic PayPal payment attracts a charge of 3.4% + 20p paid for by the Seller, ie. the one receiving the payment. What this covers, in terms of protection to buyer, is non-delivery of goods, nothing more.

But the more pressing question has to do with dealing with PayPal in the first place after you have dealt with a buyer or seller. You have to be wary.

Corporate Scams make scammers look like child's play.

  • Only non-delivery? So zero help / protection if the seller sends you a banana instead of a bike?

  • Indeed, Banana via Royal Mail Special Delivery at that.

    Surely this is not news?

  • fetches bananas from fridge

  • Have I mentiond Jazz Cycles yet? I imagine I wrote quite a text about them but cant remember posting it.

the part about no charges associated with "gifting" through paypal is not true, as stated above by Fruit. maybe you were talking about transaction within one country? i for sure know it does cost to "gift" by paypal abroad.

  • ^ not from UK > NL or the other way around....

  • The complete PayPal price list of fees is in their T&C's.

    https://www.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside

Of-course I was referring to PayPal's basic service which does not attract fees. Sending money abroad involves a currency exchange which has its own fees attached.

  • i will find out soon enough how good paypal is in either retreiving money or getting the seller to get of his ass and send me my frame, i will file a dispute tomorow.

  • oh no man! is that bulgarian lo-pro you're talking? i hope it goes well, man

  • it arrived today, i guess the seller was just the quiet type :)

  • quiet's no good when you have to wait and wait and wait
in any case great it all worked out
