  • I don't get people who don't get coriander, garlic, olives, humus, yoghurt, anchovies, sour cucumbers etc.

I dig all of those bar coriander and anchovies (I'm a vegetarian) you can't compare one with the other though, when fresh it's just so powerful and it will take over all the other flavours of a meal, perhaps my palate is not sophisticated enough to appreciate it.

No, it may just be that you taste it with unusual intensity. Tastes differ (if often only slightly), and if you think it tastes soapy, you may just taste one or several particular flavour components to make others seem less prominent.

  • I can't believe coriander is getting shit off bike nerds.

  • Actually, I'm not a technophobe by any stretch, but I just don't get Facebook, My Space, Twitter, foursquare ect.

  • R 'n' B

  • probably means a gherkin

No, I mean sour cucumbers. It's like gherking, but it ain't sweet. It's actually salty. It's called sour, just like sauerkraut.

  • I don't mind the R...the B's ok too....it's the 'n' I don't get

Now you're saying. I can eat and drink just anything (perhaps I'm greedy). I can listen to anything.
My Space, Piczo, Bebo, MSN Messenger, Twitter, You Tube for anything than music videos, Facebook - don't get them, don't really need them, they annoy me.

  • i don't 'get' rap! I listened to dizzie rascal at glasto on TV and was amazed by how ordinary it was musically (though i guess the slam poetry aspect is clever -and dylan did it ). The backing singers carried the tiune and then only sporadically.

perhaps i'm too old being bought up on CSN+Y and other west coast marvells like the beatles

Rap, or the wider genre of Hip Hop is at a pitiful low at the moment. UK Hip Hop is really the bottom of the barrel.

The resurgence of Dre and his ilk basically gave birth to a bling and bitches movement that has been a long, ongoing death march for the credibility of the genre. I blame Eminem for this, albeit he is an unwitting motivator in this decline. As a white rapper he appealed to a far whiter audience than rap has had before. The same audience went in search of more music that they could relate to and this didn't involve tracks about living in places they didn't know about, being a colour that they weren't and living a life that they couldn't understand. Naturally where their money went, the trend of music followed and now rappers were making tracks about what they knew, bling and bitches. Inevitably the British contingent tried to follow suit but frankly we don't do this well and the end result was the ensuing rubbish that gets heralded as brilliant because frankly we don't have anything else.

Dizzee Rascal is good, but he isn't brilliant and suffers from the lack of investment, technology and production back up. I'll give him a lot of credit though, he broke the british mould where it was beginning to be difficult to identify artists by their sound.

The sad thing is, British Hip Hop used to be phenomenally good. If it was being released today, with the sort of backing current artists enjoy, it would be a major success. For UK artists, check out Elementalz - Brotherhood, Classic was the Day - Funky DL, What's Goin On - Black Twang, Where My Mind is At - Roots Manuva to name just a few.

US Hip Hop also has it's brilliance pre bling and bitches, even has moments of it now. Sage Francis, Gza (Especially Liquid Swords) Cypress Hill, Dr. Octagon (A frightening incarnation of Kool Keith, KRS1, EPMD.

Alas Hip Hop seems to have a tendancy to kill itself with it's own mainstream. From it's origins it rose up but Gangsta Rap took the lead and bought about a decline. A reformation of sorts came about, but again the products of excesses became the source material and inevitable decline. I imagine that those of us who prefer more substance to their style hope that the next reinvention isn't too far off.

  • brotherhood? no way. i bought the two? albums and was so disappointed i charity shopped them off again.

hip hop as a genre of music simply isnt represented properly in the mainstream which is where everyone gets their ideas of music genre from. so skydancer not likeing it as a result of dizzie or anyone else in the maistream isnt a suprise. hell i hate it myself from what i hear as cars drive by or what the radio plays... but there is such a wealth of artists who rarely - never get play on mainstream shows because thats not what is selling. hip hop underwent a shift and id go so far to say that a sub genre got invented - hip pop. pop means popular in music terms and so if people buy the bling/bitch stuff you mention, then most people who are trying to get on and get paid are gonna go down the same route because its easy money (if such a thing exists ni the music industry) "making hits is easy, put an r&b bitch n the hook, there you go with a platinum cd" it becomes formulaic because thats what sells in the mainstream. but its not representative of the fuller picture...... having said that, the fuller picture was better and reached its peak around late 90's.

with a lot of new and emerging genres of music its easy to label certain aspects of it hip hop and this may lead folks to decide they dont like it much. the whole "urban" (puke) music thing is mostly a shame of sounds to my ears, but hip hop, nah i still love it.

i do say all this with both ears still in the past though. i rarely listen to modern shows anymore as im always left a bit confused. i know people hate westwood, but that guy and his show back in the mid 90's changed my direction in music, and for that he will always be a legend, despite not being a fan anymore.

basically i agree with the seldom killer (except on that one group, actually two, im not a kool keith fan either).

  • What about 'Hippity Hoppity' people like Slick Rick or Rhazel, or even Swollen Members. They iz good to my ears. (when I feel like it)

i make a point of finding the original as it's nearly always better.
moby is perfect example. can't stand him or his music.dunno what all the fuss is about.
people who get paid to stand in the corner with a pair of headphones half on their head nodding to themselves. just put the ipod on shuffle and be done with it. this isn't 2000 people in ibiza it's a wet tuesday night in a bar that's a cafe during the day.

i guess this should be in the rant thread.

I know someone who used to routinely get gigs like this and just turn up and run out a pre-recorded mix off a CD player of some funk and other chilled out stuff. In the meantime he was busy practicing into his headphones for weekend dance sets until he could afford his own turntables.

Not sure he ever got cought out.

  • Ha^^^^

from memory, i hated the guys voice, the flow and timing were way off and didnt much like the beats...

Spot on the Dr Dre production machine bing and bitchs is where all starts to go wrong even though Dr Dre has some good stuff himself.

As said Kool Keith / Dr Octogon is excellent as is Slick Rick (London born, NY raised so has an interesting sound), tribe called quest these three even if you end up not liking the music as it were it certainly is a show of some excellent musical, story telling, skills and a better understanding of Hip hop e.t.c
