not to pour scorn on anyone else's enjoyment - musical taste is fickle as fuck and i'm sure i like loads of bands that are objectively utter shite. that said - BB is white frat boy nonsense for the most part - i suspect if any non-white "hip hop" act had put out most of their records they'd be laughed out of town, yet these clowns get a pass.
anyway, what do i know.
flame away if you fancy, probably won't engage - said what i said in the spirit of the thread title.

all rap and hip hop pre 36 Chambers was bad.

I always assumed you were non-white yourself, but this post has made me wonder...

whiter than a wilco concert.

No flames here, waaay tooo hot already at my hobbit desk.
I liked those two albums and come back to them occasionally. While ill communication sounded good at the time, I don't often listen to it very often. If at all. -

I love the instrumentals

Not sure if I’m interpreting the right way but I’d say that the opposite is possibly true. They got a tougher deal than most by being white and Jewish.
Frat boy rap was more than anything their persona and then they became that for a while (watch the docu on Apple TV). Licensed to Ill is essentially two albums, fratboy rap and the other is the crazy sampling and instrumentals (when you ignore the vocals). Not gonna push anything on anyone but give Paul’s Boutique more than one listen. It was produced 31 years ago and still sounds relevant today if you ask me.

nyeeeh - possibly, tho it could be argued that they got a free ride because of white privz.

wasn't the controversy that retrospectively, the entire album was put together by the producers and they just did shit raps over it? happy to be corrected.

is it strictly speaking rap tho? i dunno. and that's kinda my point.
also - gatekeeping music is a bit shoddy. including myself in that, to be clear.

Approaching middle age, not sure if there’s any class in me. Ouch all the same.
-
• #2544
I think it would pass most objective tests.
Who's gatekeeping? I just think it's funny, is that allowed?

• #2545
Don't worry, I'm heading out the other side...

Chevy Chase recorded a rap record before KRS One

Their 1st group album and subsequent 1st round solo albums are all bona fide classics. They were also amazing at self marketing and branding way before it was what everyone did. Definitely started tailing off post Wu Tang Forever though

I don't know, a lot of hip-hop was pretty damn goofy in the 80's, dig out 'Krush Groove' for a laugh.
