  • Yeah. Tyres need to be more sexy. I've gone from poorly set-up clinchers to properly set-up clinchers and then to tubs - each change a revelation. I'd really like to try some Flow rims with GP4000s ii clinchers now.

  • I have that exact set of wheels, if you want to borrow them for a test ride?

I've got 11 speed and 10 speed freehubs.

  • Seemed a little high for Ultegra 11, even with the carbon tubular wheels.

  • I'm going to pick up some Wheelsmith super wide 60mm clinchers soon. So far I rate their customer service and response speed!

  • So you are giving up alloy braking surface for 185 grams*?

    • a proper wheel company with proven record and wind tunnel testing and same profile as 2009 404 ..

    LOL at:

Same weight as Zipp404 Firecrest Clincher
Stiffer than Zipp404 Firecrest & ENVE 6.7SES Clinchers
LESS THAN HALF the price of Zipp404 Firecrest
ONE THIRD of the cost of ENVE 6.7SES
HALF the price of some high street Chinese factory wheel sets

    They're clinchers.

    These should be good.

I know a few people using Taiwanese / Chinese carbon clinchers who are running latex tubes and they aren't yet dead! Velox tape does a (tiny) bit of insulation.

If you try this and die please don't blame me, but do be sure to post.

  • worth going for the VCLS 2.0 post if buying the AL SLX?

also do canyon do a post-TDF sale these days? might wait until after tour to see in any case

(in other bike news looks like ridley are going to release their red tour frame, which is good)

    • a proper wheel company

    WTF are you on about?

  • Y'know, not like Planet X.

  • Get on with the program miro, god.

  • Gigantex have a good rep.

Amey darling, you don't half chat some shit.

I am giving up on aluminium braking surfaces because I don't need them. I weigh 60kg, and live in London. If I was going to be tearing down alpine descents, I'd get some aluminium tubs, but I'm not. I'm riding short, quick training rides and 100 mile club runs on the weekend. I'll take the aerodynamic and weight advantage, thanks.

I'll take that ~185g saving, and I'll take the 25mm wide brake-trake against the Zipps 18.7, and I'll take the profile that's been stolen from a 2013 SES Enve wheel, rather than a 2009 Zipp, and I'll save £400 off the list price of the Zipp 60's, and I'll get wheel bags, rim tape and 45g skewers included.

p.s. I would love to hear what constitutes a proper company in your eyes.

My thought was to get the wheels, put some veloplugs in there and then go latex. Are you inferring that there might be a problem with carbon/latex? What's with the insulation?

  • The veloplugs might make it a little trickier installing tyres if they're a bit tight.

    Just use electric tape.

    Never had a problem before!

However, after Neil snapped 2 tyre levers trying to get GP4000s off his Pacenti rims, if they're that bad then I might need all the help I can get.

Carbon rims and latex tubes are still considered a bad idea and most builders will say don't do it. It would be interesting to hear what Mr Wheelsmith thinks. It's a major reason to go with tubs, however (like I say above) there are people getting away with it and there are things you can do to help you get away with it.

Latex when it fails does so relatively dramatically, dumping the clincher hooks onto the road and it's not so easy to control, so it's a danger. If your rims get hot they can go.

You're buying carbon clinchers so I assume you're aware of correct braking technique, and you're best not taking them to the alps! :-)

Latex tubes can pop if there are any fine splinters inside the rim – have a really good look, run some superfine sandpaper through if needed.

I'm told Velox's standard cloth tape is better for insulating the tubes from heat than veloplugs.

But sir its London I was talking about and the wet braking on carbon ..

  • blah blah blah

  • Wet braking on carbon is fine.

You just need decent pads. The campagnolo red ones I have do a solid job.

  • Quite.

Is this the new wheel thread by the way?

  • But sir its London I was talking about and the wet braking on carbon ..

I really don't think he intend to commute on it.

  • I really don't think he intend to commute on it.

I have a 5 minute walk to work. No commute needed, although they will be used in all weathers.
