And for Ollie; choice is simple. Planet X is not a bicycle company but Cannondale on other hand is.

Maybe .. maybe someone from Sigma is reading this (?)
Dude I work for a Trek reseller, our trade catalogue show less than half the Madone compare to last year.

If you are going to spend 1k on a bike, make sure it's something you like, bit of a waste of money otherwise. All modern group sets work enough, provided they are set up right, so just buy the bike that fits you, which you like- not the one with the best spec, or the one people on the internet told you to buy.

What a load of shit. Planet x are a bike company (what the fuck else do they make or sell?!).
They make great bikes for reasonable money - which people have ridden to national championship wins on the track, road and TT's - there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with them. -

pppffft Planet X isn't even a real planet. It was a hypothetical ninth planet believed to be beyond Neptune from the early 1900s until the discovery of Pluto in 1930, and a hypothetical tenth planet beyond Pluto from 1978 before finally being disproven in 1993.

Buy the 10sp cannondale.

Ok so... SuperSix or CAAD10 frame PURELY in terms of how much fun I'll have? If it's the Caad I can probably afford 10sp Ultegra, which would be nice
Did fancy carbon, however I get the impression the Caad will make me feel more alive when I'm on it (I like thrashing it about town/to uni)

What are you on about?

• #5760
^^as in ultegra 6700? why not just get a second hand caad10 then get ultegra 6800 for £432 at probikekit, then other bits after?

Never owned/ridden carbon, but have been told it reduces a lot of the feedback you get from the road surface, which is something I liked/found fun about my old bike..

Do some test rides. Or dont.
I'm out.

• #5763
Yeah will do when I get a chance. Thanks :)

I test rode both the CAAD 10 and the Supersix with 105 over the same ground. CAAD 10 was quicker according to Strava (although I did ride it before the Supersix)*, but the Supersix seemed much more comfortable and instantly put a smile on my face.
The Supersix at 1400 seems to be a great deal at the moment, and is what I'd get if I could get over the fact that I'd need a spacer tower and if I had the money.
*the puny distance was about 7 miles, so not far enough to REALLY tell I know....

Depends on the bike. I've ridden soft carbon and harsh carbon - same goes for alu. The only way you will know if by riding them. Contact points and tyre choice make more difference to comfort/road feel than frame material anyway.

They make great bikes for reasonable money - which people have ridden to national championship wins on the track, road and TT's - there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with them.Their assembly can be shockingly bad. A chap came to my old shop with his brand carbon machine complaining about the front shifting. The clearance between the (23c) tyre and the seat tube was so small the tyre was rubbing against the front derailleur clamp when it was set-up properly. Finding another, thinner clamp being obviously time-consuming the mechanic decided to rotate the clamp a bit, messing-up the shifting in the mean-time. But hey, at least it was not rubbing. That's the sort of corners they take.

Same could be said for a Cannondale built by Evans or any mailorder/big store bought bike... Bit of a moot point really.
The bikes are good when set up correctly.

Still remind me of the sandwiches they had on the ferry from Ostend to Dover when I came to England for the first time.

The bikes are good when set up correctly. You're completely missing the point. In order to set the derailleur properly we had to replace the clamp, because the one that was specced was not fit for purpose. They knew it and put it on anyway. A Cannondale would only need a PDI.

Bit like what happen to andy.w frame that clearly not designed for 23mm tyres.
Not Planet X owns frame, but can see his point.

I've ridden the shit out of a CAAD10 and a Supersix Evo Hi-mod.
The Hi-mod shits on the CAAD10. However at 3 times the price, it's not worth it.
The CAAD10 with ultegra would be a solid bike. The ride is a bit harsh with alu, so I'd make sure you've carbon seatpost and stem. Harsh compared to lovely carbon, but it's not harsh really. It's a beautiful bike.
Also decent wheels will make a world of different. So if a cannondale geometry suits you, get the caad10 with whatever group and some nice wheels for when you want the ride to feel good and some standard wheels for when it's crap weather.
To be clear. CAAD10 with whatever group and nice wheels with latex innertubes and nice tyres will be BOOMting.

In what respect? Genuinely interested - I can't imagine anything being so much better the CAAD9 I ride at the moment. The only thing I'd change is the paint.

Ride.
Just the feel. It's more comfortable given the carbon. It feel more secure so you can push it further. It's lighter so feels more nimble.
I mean, real world there won't be much in it, but it feels better. Like changing between a road motorbike and a race motorbike. A good rider could be nearly as fast on both, but one will feel a bit nicer.
The CAAD10 is solid bike though, really good.

Comparing OTP configurations, or similar builds? FWIW mine is a right MAMIL chariot at 6.8kg with tubs and PM. I suspect only absolute monsters - like you - and journos put in enough distance to really get a feel for the difference.
-
• #5775
Ha I'm not very good. I've just been through few bikes now so learned to feel the difference. Though a lot of it is astute bullshit, to be honest.
And they were close enough builds, same wheels just swapped between the two. Wheels make a HUGE different to the ride of a bike. Like putting terrible tyres on a race motorbike. But people don't get what a different wheels inc. tyres and innertubes make.
