  • Cubes have really short top tubes, I have found.

I'd expect a square geometry from them.

  • Beyond the Boardman CX, what are the other shouts for full mudguard fitting bikes for ~£600 second hand?

Or is the boardman the out and out winner due to disc brakes?

  • You want a road bike though? Kinesis Racelight T2 and Trek 1.2 both have proper mudguard mounts.

  • get a foffa

  • I thought i'd post in here, is there a cross bike recommendation thread? Missed it if so.

Yes more of a road bike than cross bike, but want something that can get dirty and is made tough.

It'll be used for a load of horrid winter miles on the road, with 25 or 28c tires and full guards.

Occasional cross country rides on fair terrain.
Possible audax rides for fun, so pannier racks mounts would be good.
Maybe a blue moon cross race.

  • There's a 'best cyclocross bike under a grand' thread that is pretty much the general CX bike discussion thread.

You seem to be describing a Genesis Croix de Fer.

  • Ah. Yes, might not be relevant there as it's not really for cross.

Steel isn't a bad shout. I've destroyed a couple of aluminium frames with dents. Steel could be fixed.

  • Ah. Yes, might not be relevant there as it's not really for cross.

It's very rare for people to buy CX bicycle for the purpose of cyclo cross.

  • Oh. Okay. I'll piss of over there then.

  • Don't forget to take your mudguard on your way out.

Dolan Preffisio with Rival 650£ish with mudguards from Dolan website.

  • Yeah or Ribble winter build / Kinesis T2/TK2/TK3 etc

  • I'd think carefully about how often you're going to use it for off-road and cx. If you are, fine. But otherwise I would have thought most cx bikes would be pretty stiff on the road.

Money no object I would chose a kinesis TK3. But I think the odds of finding a second hand one are limited.

When I was looking for a Racelight they seem to hold their value. I don't know if the TK3 coming out has affected that. But unless you're on a real budget for the frame you almost may as well buy one of the T2's new.

Other obvious options in steel would be the Surly Pacer, Genesis Equilibrium, or the Surly Cross Check.

  • ^Also Charge Filter

  • Even the newer Genesis Equilibrium is cheaper and better value than last year, especially the Sora equipped one that now come with a carbon fork (previously steel).

  • No rack/guard mounts?

  • Definitely has guard mounts (and the clearances for them - that thing is loose!)

  • Cervelo S2 looks affordable at £1999 for shimano 105 biek:

  • Seemed like a lots of money for a carbon bike with 105 and FSA components.

But then it is a Cervelo.

  • But then it is a Cervelo.

    Exactly; thats what I though.

£1999 is RRP, could get lower in next sales.

  • £2k bike
    "affordable"

  • new graphics are a bit grim

No dentist could live with that spec.

  • I quite like the updates they've made to the frameset.

  • affordable cervelo not affordable bike ;)
