Anyway I'm busy rolling up my jeans and heading out the door to chase down the next hip bike scene .
I'll return to this gem a little later.

I'm really glad this thread has got back on topic

I.e. credit card touring, bivvy etc.
Literally what?
-
• #2855
I'm guessing buying what you when you get places rather than carrying heavy laods, and a bivvy is a tiny tent/waterproof sleeping bag cover for minimal weight and space. Not advised for Northerly climes

CX bikes can handle anything you throw at them. They even make great folders to take on the train.
Get off the train, unfold, and then race, train, commute, tour the globe, or urban utilitize. The choice is yours*.
*not recommended for off-road use

Ooh I like 'Urban utilise', I am going to attempt to use it radomly in conversation today. The company is doing a 2010 Burgundy tasting tonight, I wonder if I can slip it in there...

I like my cx bike, but it came with two sets of bottle mounts, mudguard eyelets and rack mounts- pure bred race machine it is not.
What it is suits me though- currently it is performing the role of winter road bike admirably.

I'll be doing LEJOG on my CAADX. Maybe. We'll see how it gets on on the Coast to Coast in Feb, first - it will be interesting to see how well it handles being loaded up at the back.
It's also my weapon of choice for road rides at the moment, too. If I was only allowed one bike...

You should also point out that you race cross on it too.

• #2861
Anyone here got a Burls ti road bike? I see a few threads for the fixed option.

I think 'race' is too kind a word Andy :)
But yes it gets raced in the London X league and smashed about at Swinley.
FWIW I love it to bits.

Would that boardman take 42mm tyres, without guards?

Would anybody let me take their carbon road bike for a spin?
I am considering buying one but have never even sat on one.
Size 50-54cm

I reckon yes- will measure later

Specifically, I owned a Kona JtS for about 4 years and it did just fine as a pretend road bike, light tourer, tow path messing-about-by-boats bike and even TT bike for hilly events. As a road bike, it's obviously a long way off being as nice as a similar spec proper road bike, being quite flexy due to the skinny and long chainstays, but as one bike to do it all CX bikes in general (the ones that aren't full-on race tools, at least) and the Kona JtS in particular are hard to beat.

What do you think? Are 42mm tyres bang on 42mm wide, i.e. is the measurement outermost lug to outermost lug, or is it the carcass of the tyre, and lugs are additional?
Oh, and:

Maybe. Drop me a PM if you're in London. Mine sounds about the right size.
And wtf is all this CX nonsense? Listing who's had a CX bike, honestly! Plus there's a thread for that anyway.

• #2869
The point was that some of those claiming to speak knowledgeably about cx bikes actually have fuck all knowledge given that they've never even owned one.
I must've missed the announcement of you being appointed a moderator btw.

What I should be saying is that the majority of cyclocross bicycles are generally idea for light touring.
Happy now?
-
• #2871
Dude, everyone knew perfectly well what you meant. They're just trolling.
fwiw, my PX Uncle John had mounts for everything, and my current early 90's unbuilt one has mounts for nothing.
^^ and tbh I thought it was fairly clear that the last line was written in a playful way.

I've got a Lynskey cooper cx, no real intention of doing any cyclo cross just using it as a road bike with disc brakes :-) it's got mudguards, 2 bottle and rack braze ons... It's an amazingly nice ride, got a carbon cx disc fork on it.

Did James have one too? I can't remember whether it's a Burls or not (fixed).
-
• #2875
No, Burls don't do brushed aluminium.
Until recently the worldwide cyclocross market was pretty tiny in comparison to Road or MTB so the big manufacturers would only dip their toe in and build bikes like the Specialized Tricross or Lemond Poprad that were not race bikes.
Since Cyclocross became a cool thing to do in countries like USA and the UK these big folk have realised there is money to be earned and have started producing more race orientated models like the Crux et al.
