  • Narf narf. My girlfriend stopped being a fan when she realised the highlight was the rain abating a bit whilst stood in a lay by near Norwich.

  • Big 18 inch floor standing job; search "air circulator" or "gym fan"

  • I'm still waiting for Norway to Stock fans. FFS.

Outdoors I held 320w for 10mins during what was the worse paced 20min test ever*
Trying to do 4min intervals indoors and I'm killing myself trying to average 290w.

I'm literally 40w weaker. In fact its worse then that. Because I'm not actually less powerful indoors. I just cant get it out. So the effectiveness of this torture is InFact shite compared to outdoors.

(*was meant to start at 270w and ramp. But did a Clarkson 'POWER!' smashed it for 5 mins then slowly died for 15mins.

  • Power on a turbo vs on the road is never going to be the same due to the differing kinetic energy/inertia involved.

A lemond revolution is about the best you will get (until Tacx sort out the firmware in their Neo).

You may want to consider having 2 FTPs - one for the turbo and one for the road.

  • My road FTP is set to 290w. (Garmin, and Trainingpeaks)

My FTP in Trainerroad is 270w.

The problem here is when TR uploads to TP. Which asigns a reduced TSS value for the session. Its not a big deal though. My main concern is that my targets are suitably hard, while being reproducable.

I will likely gain 10w just from having a fan. But I'll always be a bit weaker indoors.

  • Indoor/outdoor is going to be ~10%

  • about to do a new FTP test today, hoping it has now got over 300

  • its quite person specific, I actually put out slightly more power on the turbo than the road annoyingly, although they have got closer since I started using the Lemond.

  • What PM you using?

  • I'm a lumpy fecker. So I tend to throw my upper body about and engage my core a lot.

On the turbo my legs fatigue horribly.

Which makes me think I'm working at seated leg strength at least.

  • On the turbo my legs fatigue horribly.

What turbo you got? Magnetic? Grim.

Throwing your upper body abotu ang using the core will just use more oxygen and reduce that going to your legs, making you slower. So it'd do little to help you be better on road.

  • Yeah. Magneto pro.

All the blood in my body is being circulated near my skin surface to aid cooling. So i doubt my legs are actually recieving any oxygen.

I've done a 5 x 20 high sweetspot workout on it. So its obviously not that bad.

  • power2max classic

  • Do you re callibrate it during the efforts? I presume it was sent back for the temp adjustment part.

  • Yeah, magnetic traniers are horrible to ride. Get a nice direct drive and or fluid and a big big fan.

  • Speaking of fans, I had a couple of Dutch guys complimenting me after my turbo session last night. "Lookings goot! Izh verysh szhtable"

    #benefitsofbackyardturbotraininginblockofflats #twofans!

  • It was purchased a while after the temp adjustment issue so had already had it done.

Yes I have recalibrated after 20/30mins (typically only see a small change in offset from ~747 > 745 or similar)

I think it is largely down to being able to better hold a consistent power on the turbo vs the road - I should probably do more flat DC TTs as a farier comparison.

  • Fair enough, sounds legit then.

Do you tubro more than road?

I do find, if I've been turbo training a lot and not doing steady state efforts outside, it takes a few weeks to get used to the variable effort needed to maintin the same watts. Also that if I've been training a lot on turbo, then it's easier for me to ride turbo and put good power out on it.

I also have a lemond, they're so good.

I'm only maybe 5% down on turbo to road. But that's under vo2. Once we get to vo2 i'll drop to 15%.

  • Pretty much turbo 90% of the time at the moment, but even when it was more like 90% road I would still find the same effect.

    Yes Lemond is awesome(-ly loud)

I should have qualified that - indeed at shorter intervals road power is higher than turbo, its really only >15mins that I seem to be better at on the turbo.

  • I bet, would be willing to bet, that if you spent a few weeks training outside doing efforts on the road, your road power would exceed turbo power.

  • Been a few Kickrs on the local sales site.
Been really tempted. My desire for more volume and less exposure to the Nordic Winter while rocking a heavily negative TSB. Has made me think about putting more of my bike funds into my indoor set-up.

  • I have been happy with my tacx smart turbo, it was cheap from germany

    Disappointed, new ftp is 297

  • More volume!? I think you need LESS volume to go faster!!

  • No, I ride faster when my MP3 player is set to 11.
