I'm also off to New York next week. I haven't planned anything but are the any recommendations for restaurants that are not too expensive that I might be able to book now? I'm staying on 7th/51st street but happy to go anywhere a reasonable distance

The other restaurant which is tempting me is El Celler de Can Roca. I've not been to Girona either. I bloody love Spain.
I don't think you need to stray from here. AT ALL

Sounds the biz...
Save yourself the walk from Richmond station and drop into the Bingham or even Petersham Hotel restaurant.

long lunch at bentley's oyster bar yesterday, was excellent. Not as trendy as some places around but the oysters, fish pie, herring, w dessert of rarebit and irish coffees were amazing. great unpretentious service too.

Disagree that Spain is THE place for food. Each to their own but Italy seems to have the best all round.
In Bologna a while back and ate here:
Very very good. Understated but good.
The thing is that in Spain it's very regional - you eat well in the fancy places where the money is (i.e. the North), but in general, Spanish food is average. Meal for the day is usually a slab of meat and some chips.
Italy however, as in their mastery of most fine things (though not so good on the the unified generalities) is exceptional. This is the country whose soft drinks even come covered with a foil top - San Pellegrino sodas are the best.
On the same note, in Italy you will find many, many good dishes without meat, In Spain this is a rarity. Though not a vegetarian I suspect that restaurants that can cook well without flesh, are usually above par.

Seriously? Have you ever been outside any of the major cities in Spain?
I honestly don't think you could be further of the mark. Once you get out of the cities, regardless whether this is a tourist trap or a provincial backwater the food gets better and better and to say that the best food is where the money is smells of ignorance to me, some of the best Spanish dishes are considered "peasant food" plain and simple. -

Patatas a la riojana FTW!
Spain - best place in the world for food.
