to be fair - anyone that calls themselves a 'foodie' is going to be a bit of a pompous twat.
apologies to any self described foodies on here*
*not really.
true. i just used that word because i can't remember if it was a chef or a food writer. it was years ago. but it struck me as an argument not without merit.

It is indeed awesome. Monday nights BYO is a brilliant way to get some top quality steak and wine without really breaking the bank!

No such luck for me. My chums paid £120 for a kilo of chateaubriand, crazy! I settled for the Ribeye which was delicious and PERFECTLY done.

WIN! I didn't know they did this!
I'm a sucker for their cocktails, the martinis and gin fizz type concoctions are top notch.

I went there on Saturday(commercial rd), had a 1.4 kilo chateaubriand between 3 of us... absolutely great, if a little pricey.
Also I think their bone marrow starter is better than St Johns... there I said it.

I went to JSW the other Saturday lunch and had this tasting menu and wine flight
http://www.jswrestaurant.com/sub.php?id=38&parent=2
They said we could swap anything with the set menu if the whole table wanted to, so the lamb went in favour of 72 Hours Ox Cheek with Truffle Mash and Liquorice which was the right decision as it was superb. The food was excellent, the service let it down a little as they were a little green but meant well and were really nice. When the wine was presented they detailed what it tasted like rather than what it was, when I questioned this they struggled to remember the name of the producers which irked me a little, as it's my job to forget that not them. They also brought out the lamb and when questioned quickly removed the one plate that had been placed and legged it off to get the right dish.. made me chuckle.
Oh yes, special mention to the foie gras croutons... mouthwateringly bad for you.. I need to work out how to do that.
between the 4 of us we had 2 cheese courses at the end as well which were pretty good and the port that was paired with it, excellent.
Under £100 a head for all that all in all excellent value.

Ask a bloke if he has 7 wives?
Hardens has reviews for these two
http://www.hardens.com/az/restaurants/st-ives/tr26/porthminster-cafe.htmand this one doesn't have scores for some reason
http://www.hardens.com/az/restaurants/st-ives/tr26/the-loft-restaurant.htmNot sure if it's just locals who have reviewed the Porthminster though... does sound worth a visit

it's a fair way... I wouldn't waste your time with Stein, Nathan Outlaw in Rock is far superior...
saying that getting fish & chips from rick stein was really good; beer battered monkfish ftw
