  • More float doesn't necessarily mean easier to clip out of, though. It just means the point at which the unclipping happens is a bit less clearly defined. I'm not going to get into the whole brake less debate, obv, except to note that I don't do it.

  • aye more float doesn't always mean that but in the eggbeaters case it very much does

  • i used to unclip, really easily with eggbeaters

  • yeah it only took me a week or so of riding before i realised that they were dangerous for riding fixed AND i haven't mentioned the major design flaw that once the bearings wear out the clips actually slide off the spindle entirely and yes. it did happen to me (doh) :)

  • I was told that all the BMC frames are the 2007 models. The company went bust and was bought out by the owners of Assos. There has been no R&D since then but they just put on a different paint scheme each year.

Cannot comment on the veracity of the above at all.

I still think they look awesome in a sci-fi manner.

    then why say that?
i personally know the U.K. brand manager for BMC, i could ask him what he thinks about your post but i already know the response is going to contain the words. 'cunt' 'dancing james' 'talking out his arse' and 'knows fuck all'

    ^^ i call bullshit.

One of the product designers I work with, used to work for BMC in switzerland, they have been very R&D heavy for the last two years, especially in developing their new carbon weave tubing... which i believe is being used on the 2011 top spec frames.

you may be right about the Track Machine though, i dont believe they have been made since 2008 at the latest..... they are not in the 2011 catalouge either.

  • as i said i was told this but could not comment on the veracity

  • an insane combo to run mtb pedals with huge amounts of float (i.e very easy to clip out of) on a bike intended to be stopped with your feet.
i have 0º quattro pedals which are great but i do have a brake too. brakeless on the road really grinds my gears

I had eggbeaters for many years, and really like them, just would'nt use them fixed. I also have the quattros on my fixed ride, and they are a far more suitable pedal for fixed (IMHO).

  • i was told you were a pedophile.

  • as i said i was told this but could not comment on the veracity

    shame on you.
just because you are a Rapha 'mechanic' doesnt mean you are allowed to talk shit..... naughty step.....10 minutes.

me too, i have crank brothers on all bikes, eggbeaters on the xc bike, mallets on the mtb and tourer, quattros on the fixed - love em!

putting eggbeaters on fixed is a prime example of style over function as anyone has used them will tell ya.

and mr smyth - paedo comments are probably a bit harsh matey

  • "were" as in once was. i hear you are a reformed character these days.

  • on that subject my folks are retired now and getting a motorhome soon, they've got their hearts set on a mercedes 'rapido'

am looking forward to the late night doctoring of the van graphics :D

  • It was reported to me by another mechanic whilst in france, cant remember which team he was from, but I had just been saying to him how much I liked the BMC frames, there was a swiss team mostly riding them (their clothes sponsor was also assos).

i think he used the term pedophile - sense of humour fail

  • i think he used the term pedophile - sense of humour fail

understanding fail... pedophile/paedophile 2 different spellings? is it funny if it's got no 'a'? because the americans spell funny?

am having one of those days i think

  • pedo - pedal

I think this was the spelling pun that was intended

I have Candys on the 29er too, really rate them. Had to shim the cleats though. Went over the bars and subsquently over a small cliff, without them releasing. Still, meant my flesh protected the nice paint job.

not sure if it's a spelling pun if pedophile is how you spell the word pedophile ;)

'the downside to hills is the descent'

  • Looks like Cinelli frameset is sold so BMC could be back on the cards again.

Hope they went to the right man!

I rode Crank Bros pedals (not the eggbeaters, but the ones with the same mechanism enclosed in a small platform) for quite a while and never had a problem with unintentional unclipping other than with really worn cleats.

The lack of resistance to float does make it very easy to unclip if you let your feet point other than forwards, but that's pilot error IMO. OTOH, I'm more or less a non-skidder except in dire emergency - I can well imagine that they wouldn't stand up to persistent yanking as well as other designs.

Its the lack of platform that causes them to be a bit unsuitible to fixed riding . Both me and Tilover use quattros fixed without complaint. But you can clip out of standard eggbeaters too easily (had them on a commuter bike for some years). I dont skid, but I do ride down steep mountian roads at mega RPMs. I would'nt want to do that with eggbeaters.

  • :) ^^^^

I know Mick. That was accidental.
