  • Worked out ok, although the thumb screw thing that releases the stem / bars needs to be unscrewed earlier in the folding process than usual. MK1.

  • Looks excellent, @dbr
It looks like you've attached with (what looks like) knurled fasteners from an Anglepoise lamp - does that not invite scrotes to remove without the use of tools? Or are they for ease of legit removal?
Nicely executed in mixed materials, thobut.

  • Ta!

Ease of removal. I didn't want to piss around with a big plastic quick release and this little Brompton never gets locked up outside so security isn't really an issue.

  • Looks great!

  • Thinking to finally become a Brompton owner, but as with everything I touch I love to tinker and make the bike my own. Quick question does anyone know what's the lightest Brompton out there at the moment?

  • S6L, keep it stock including the reflectors

  • Is there much difference with the ti vs the steel (aka the ride quality or is it just purely weight)

  • no idea about ride quality, you wont ride it more than 10 miles at a stretch anyway to tell. I rode mine 30 miles the other day for lols, its not a bike, its a brompton.

In terms of weight, of course you can 'upgrade' etc. but there is no point, most places you can wheel it or take it on elevator, lift etc. When you ride you wont notice the weight diff on a Brompton. They have a purpose, they serve their purpose well if kept stock. I am yet to come across anything non-stock upgrade thats actually an improvement of its purpose. Maybe brake pads but thats about it.

    Keep it stock.
    Choose the right handlebar.
    Choose the right gearing.
    Maybe go SON dynamo.
    Keep it stock.

  • You think one speed is good enough or 6 speed is a safer option for such a small bike?

  • Its your call. Gearing is very personal. Define your mileage/elevation and go from there.

I went 6 speed because the weight diff is like 200g between 6 speed and 2 speed hardly any between 3 and 6, I can live with that for the ease. I have and do use all 6 gears.

Do loads of test rides. Handlebar and gearing variation mainly. Mudguards obviously.

  • But aren't you getting the electric one as well? So in theory you need one gear if you going via that option? ;)

  • I might cancel the order as I am happy with 6 speed .. lets see when they actually declare the date and ask to pay for the rest. Its business expense anyway.

If you go to Brompton Junction you can have a go on all the variations plus the electric one. Have a go, its good fun.

Get one they are absolutely brilliant.

  • Hoke want a go on my 3 speed?

  • It's between 2 and 6 speed IMO. Depends how far you ride it. 2spd is fine if you're used to fixed.

  • Weight is quite a decent saving and the fact ti wont rust or corrode is nice. The ride quality will be slight, I find a bigger difference using a quality suspension, tyres and grips.

  • Difference from 2-6speed is arund 800grams!

  • Id recommend a 2 speed over 1, you can have your normal gearing and a climbing gear, or normal and sprint!

I use a 60t chainring so my speed gear means I can cruise at 20mph+

  • Maybe, if your in town this weekend or i can just go to a evans store to play with one (granted it took me about 10 minutes to unfold the damn thing!)

  • Was thinking between 2 speed or 1 speed tbh (the dumb idea of making it fixed)

  • Thanks for the info this is really helpful. I was configuring one on the Brompton website and seeing what's the difference in weight saving and granted there is a lot saved in the gears options and lights options I was to go via the dynamo route as well.

I think at the moment i have no bike to play around with and I always love the idea to have a Brompton, however, weight of the damn thing took me by surprised and kind of the reason i want to know if anyone has made/modified one before. Granted it will be a silly project i know. The only other lightweight folding but i know is the carbon fibre hummingbird for 3.5k.

There are a few stories on the internet I have been reading where people have got their Brompton to about just under 9kg, which IMO isn't really weenie weight in this day and age.

  • Fixed is difficult afaik since you need the tensioner for the fold

  • You know me, nothing by the books.
