  • Thanks for your help chap, seems like I have quite the shopping list:
    longer seatpost
    hinge service
    frame catch
    easy wheels
    front luggage block
    luggage

  • I've been commuting on my Brompton through London for 2 and a half years now. The rims are almost worn through so I'm replacing the wheelset but I also want to know what else needs doing.
I've swapped out the chain and cogs a few times and replaced the chain tensioner quite recently. It's a 2 speed.
Or should I just take it in for a service at Brompton Junction?

  • Double check the chainring, see if it's shark toothed or not.

Does it shift 100% or have a bit of a lags every time you shift up? If so, the derailleur might need replacing, check cable and derailleur first to ensure it's clear of gurk.

If you haven't had your hinge replaced in two and a half years, then I'd advised booking it in rather.

Booking it in mean the guys will strip and put your components in a part washer to thoroughly removed the gurk, which is one of the main advantage over home mechanic.

  • I don't really shift as the smaller gear is unusable unless going up a massive incline. I'll check the chaining.

  • If copper washer bonded to frame, why can't it be reamed out rather that replacing frame?

  • Rimmed out....ha!!! Hopefully you mean reamed out.

  • It can be. Ed has, whilst trying to be helpful, has given some slightly OTT sometimes incorrect advice.

  • Too much risk, shell need to be in good condition to fit new copper washer.

  • Thanks, English not my first language, etc...
    Edited my post! Phew!

  • Too much risk, shell need to be in good condition to fit new copper washer.

But isn't there a specific (and expensive) tool for that purpose?
I changed a Brompton frame due to a crack, not hinge problem, was a 20 y.o. frame, and I remember how financially painful that was...
If too risky because lack of precision tool / machine to do this in standard workshop, Brompton should offer a factory service to save the frame, what happened to saving the planet ffs?

  • Brompton have a 'hire a reamer' scheme. Big deposit but you get it back.
Ben at Kinetics is part of the scheme though he's no longer a dealer.

  • Anyone requiring a brompton-sized bike box (or other folding bike) before I recycle it? Approx 14x13x12 inches inside.

  • hey all. One of the threads holding my front carrier block has stripped. Advice please? Quite happy to take it in to a shop as long as they know what they're doing. @edscoble

  • That's the wrong hinge. Ed is talking about the rear triangle pivot.

I've had the brompton training to replace it. It's much easier with the correct tools but can be done without. Not sure I'd take the risk personally though.

    Diy version: http://www.shanecycles.com/brompton-hinge-repair/

I know of one Evans head mech that mucked up the repair by greasing the screw heads after doing the complicated bit. Dumb luck is only the drive side screw came loose and was prevented from falling out due to the chainsets being in the way.

I guess with Evans it can be the luck of the draw if your mechanic is clued up. Shame they move staff around so much. You can't build up much of a relationship with the customers. Definitely some good guys in the company though.

  • Helicoil would be the usual fix for stripped threads. That or drill and tap to a larger screw thread.
Not sure you've got much space on that little nub on the head tube though.
Failing that weld or braze the hole up and retap.

I know. But it's the one I'm interested in and the one I asked @edscoble about.

  • After much umming and arring, I went and got a Brompton C bag last weekend. Pretty impressed with the quality of the bag. So for years I have been trying to come up with a reasonable way of using panniers or Ortlieb's handlebar bags on the Brompton.

I had adapted a Tern Truss, which worked really well. However ClikFix bags tend to have the mount at the wrong place, so much so bags drop down to the guard/wheel.

@veLLo looking forward to the Brompton Rimming thread!

  • yeah I basically need a decent mechanic that knows bromptons and one end of a helicoil from another...

  • Apologies. Got confused.

  • No problem! Google always thinks I'm asking about the main hinge too...

  • Seatposts - I need a longer one, has anyone used the Chinese carbon/titanium ones on eBay?

  • I've got a Bromfication one, which looks identical to some of the Chinese ones (including the Rockbros model) to the point where I suspect they're the same items. Had no problems with it so far.

  • That's good to know! Is that the one with the built-in seatclamp? Does it have the retaining flange? The pics of the rockbros one seem to indicate it doesn't have one, although the model sans-seatclamp does.
