  • Im out anyway, in case that ^ kicks off, enjoy your rides

  • Cheers for the responses here guys - I wasn't expecting anything!

So, excluding the slight derailing, she'll have to go back to Oz to apply, but then able to come here once it's sorted is the general consensus?

    Thank you!

  • That''s the normal procedure yes and not trying to scare you off but it's been a bit of a nightmare for some people I know lately. Think staying a few months longer in their home country than they planned/budgeted for, spouse visa could be easier?

  • Do all the paper work over here and lodge your application and get biometrics done on the day you land. I did that and 7 days later had a shiny new visa. Triple check that you comply with every regulation though. The smallest detail will and they'll not accept the application.

Why do Aussies wanna live over here? Different lifestyle, access to the rest of Europe and some genuine culture (sometimes) Aus will always be there. And Sydney is bloody expensive at the moment. Although wages are faaaar better.

  • Does anyone know who to speak to about visa's and such? I need to get some stuff sorted and not sure where to begin? Citizens advice?

  • Its a start.

Is this for your trip to Japan?

  • Kinda. Im concerned about returning to the UK after a year away as I am a US citizen (though I indefinite leave to remain).

  • US embassy should be your first port of call. Good luck.

  • Anyone ever applied for Australian Partner Visa or De Facto?
I am reading something about chest xrays etc?
Is that even relevant if one got immunized as child?
    How much did that cost?
How long did the visa application take to process?

  • They are clearly wankers.

"Best thing to come out of Sydney? The road to Melbourne"

  • Anyone applied for an ILR over here? They want a list of every time you left and returned to the country. The document then tells you to apply for a (Subject Access Request) SAR which I assumed would list all these dates - does it fuck. It's just a fucking photocopy of my previous two visa forms. Wankers.
So now I guess I just work my way through all my passport stamps or try to remember overseas trips for the last 5 years... oh well, if you're gonna make it hard I'll do it in work time and then not pay the tax on my earnings. Dicks.

  • Yep, my other half did this. She travelled for work so was a major ball ache. She missed one trip off the list, they spotted it and pulled her up on it. Luckily got away with it but from what I've heard, small mistakes can cost result in a rejected claim meaning you have to apply again AND pay the extortionate fees.

Pascalo, how's the defacto visa going? I'm going to get started this weekend.

  • We're slowly but surely getting it all together.
I hope to be ready and submit the application end of this month or so.
Still waiting for a couple of papers to arrive by post, i.e. german police checks, stat decs etc.

Found out about the medical as well, which you can do before or after you lodged your application.
    Costs around £290.
Worst part so far was reconstructing the entry and exit dates for my last 10 years of travel.

We're also gonna get married, but we want to apply before that as de-fact as I am worried about timing.
Thought it would be straight forward, but the home office spoilt the party and we had to send our passports in for a Certificate of Approval because she's here on a 5 year visa. No idea when they get that to us.
Need to be in Oz by December.

Where are you gonna be moving to, Wicksie?

  • Eesh, these things are never easy. I'm not looking forward to it, even though I will have help from a couple of friends whom have already done it.
Exciting though and well worth it!

We're moving to Melbourne in August. Can't wait. You?

  • August ... you better get started ... I don't know if you've read 40SP and 47SP yet, but if you apply from outside you have to be outside when they grant it, otherwise you ruin your apllication. Average processing time seems to be 5-6 months, sometimes takes longer than a year.

We're gonna move to Adelaide, hopefully can sort out some work there. If that ain't working, we're gonna move to Melbourne as well.

    Adelaide has nice hills!

  • Adelaide? Seriously?

  • why the hell is everyone going to aus?

  • There's a more relaxed view of racism there.

  • Lolz.

Just go straight to Melbourne Pascalo, really.

It almost never takes that long. Better not take that long!
We're cycling round Europe for a couple of months so not in Oz until the end of the year.

Right, printing out the forms now. [gulp]

  • Yep, seriously.
My other half has a house in the CBD, plus we're fucking boring people anyway, so it's the right kindo place ...

  • Rent it out.
    Move to Melbourne
    Become less boring.

I've never actually been to Adelaide however...
Sounds like you'll be sorted though, good times!

Don't spose you've got the link to the forms handy P? They're at home and I need to be a bit discreet at work.

    http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/47sp.pdf

You can edit them in Adobe Acrobat, btw ... so no need to print until you're done.

  • Top man, cheers Pascalo!

Keep us posted with how you're getting on.

  • Melbourne is alright, but I am looking for a simpler, calmer life.
One that has a good beach (and I don't mean something like St Kilda, that hardly qualifies) and some nice hills to climb by bike. Preferably while on the same ride.
And yeah, Adelaide has that. Also her family is there, plus it's cheaper, and our savings go a lot further there.
Been there twice now, both times for weeks, and I pretty much like the place.

  • Beaches? S.A also has the healthiest shark population in the world. Big, hungry white sharks. Very big. Very hungry.
Not to mention the bloody drop bears...they are 3rd biggest killer of German tourists, after crocodiles and truck drivers. Be careful down there.
