My new year's resolution for this year is to ride 25km farther each month; I did a 225 in January, so I needed a 250 in February. As today was dry and hurricane-free and some of England is still not underwater, I snaped it up and jumped on the canyon for a run up to Bishop's Stortford and back.
It felt good, not even getting lost on the way back and accidentally visiting Tottenham could dampen my spirits.
I know you've got lights that can see far far into deep space but building to a 500km in December, ooof rather you than me.

Actually it's been blue skies, dry roads and (relatively) little wind today.
I brought the weather back with me. Now it's fucked again. Enjoy.

Those Majorca photos look lovely!
The photos are just quick phone snaps. The island is bloody lovely.

Not the weekend, but I went out for a lovely muddy ride this morning. Well, I expected it to be muddy, which it was. What I didn't expect however was the amount of flooding in the woods.
At first, it started off being deep puddles and troughs. Easily passable, and pretty fun to blast through with my chunky CX tires on.
Then it got progressively worse in patches as the trail started to undulate and drop a bit. This specific area was the first time my feet dipped in the water. And has been the one time since moving here I wished my 'roller had a freewheel, solely to keep the pedals level!
Coming out of the other side of the woods there is a little raised semi-paved section, perfect for summer cruises, not so interesting when the path is covered in goose shit and mud. I found this little bit, well, bland; it was just concrete and crap to ride on, no fun.
Then the whole path disappeared completely, meaning I had to do a 180 or try and ride through it...
I tried, but pussied out when I rode of the path and started sinking into a field. All in all a good ride, and a nice way to welcome back the knobblies.

Big day out in the kent hills with Tom (TTM). Beautiful day, and having a tailwind home was very nice indeed.
My first proper session in Kent in months, reminded me why I love it so much. Managed to avoid any serious flooding / storm-based carnage too, which was also very nice indeed.

Finally rode up Mt Baldy! I've wanted to do this loop long before I came over to California. Typically, I did it with a mate after staying in the pub, eating pizza 'til after midnight the night before and with no serious riding for the last couple of months. The last 7-8k of the climb were a total pig. Nothing under 10% and a long series of stupid switchbacks probably over 14%. A right cunt. Like 10 Whitedowns at the top of a big fucking mountain.
55mph on my old steel Colnago on the way down was fucking hairy.
Oh and Arvy - if you see this, I did have dodgy guts for the first third of the climb. And yes, we will be riding this when you visit....

It was a lovely day to ride down to Rye yesterday. We stopped in Groombridge to get some snacks and ended up chatting to a friendly old guy for 25 minutes about the demise of the talented amateur in top level sport. He reminisced about a friend of his who scored a century for South Africa against England before moving here, earning three blues for Cricket, Rugby and Boxing and went on to captain England at Rugby. Quite the sporting CV!
A lovely route with plenty of sharp climbs to keep us honest:

A crazy guy doing a Tyler Durden routine outside Starbucks, then some nice steep climbing. Perfect. Except for the carpentry staple that wrote off my tyre near the end...

Went to Cambridge and back yesterday. A little over enthusiasm with the tail wind on the way out made for tough going on the way home. Just shy of 150 miles in the end so a decent day out.

^^ great roads. No snow?
I did 60km downwind, then 60km into the wind. A stupid route for today but a nice group.

Did a very slow 60 miler yesterday, as in, 4 hours slow. But it was the most fun I've had on a bike in as long as I can remember. Now that I have fat tyres I went off road, down some single track, some muddy paths, empty country lanes that ran through forests and climbed up and into the Devil's Punchbowl just outside of Haslemere. It was great fun and the weather was splendid. The off roading part of the ride really made me want a mountain bike... Really bad.
Strangely, I saw hardly anyone at all riding yesterday. Loads of people today though - I bet they all regretted not going anywhere yesterday - much nicer weather.

We notice that too, ironically enough shitload of people came out today after yesterday, least it's quite dry.

Took advantage of the tailwind and rode to Cambridge via Essex and the Hadams today.
Chapeau Upstart for going both ways. Not sure I'd want to be riding the other way today.
Pretty happy with my average speed.

Just my Grand Bois Cypres. 32c. Not ideal, but wide enough to get some traction. I had so much fun that I'd actually like a mountain bike now. Well I've been contemplating it anyway, for quite a while, but I'm even more tempted now.

Yeah - I realise, just not used to being out for that long and only doing 60 miles. First time I've done that kind of ride though and it certainly won't be the last.
