40 wet Epping miles before breakfast this morning, randomly bumping into a couple of guys I'd ridden with last week. My route was the same as theirs so nice not to be on my tod. Finished off with full English and 3 coffees at LMNH.

Got ball-bearings deep into the floods in Gloucestershire and (I think) Herefordshire, almost but not quite into Wales.
By far the longest ride of the year for me. Pretty broken now because we did do the 1st 1:45 at an enthusiastic (and unrealistic) pace.
**About going through floods:
**Do watch out for lifted drain-covers in the floods, not that you really can do anything other than go slow. -

Went out into Essex with fussballclub for my first ride of the year (the last time I did a proper ride was the 28th December).
Road bike had developed a mysterious flat tyre overnight, so I took my fixed, but really enjoyed it and anticipated extreme slowness and lack of fitness didn't really come, although we only did 46 miles and I'm not that sure I would have wanted to do too much more.
Reminded me that I actually really like riding fixed. Who knew?

Same for me, first ride of the year, but only did 20 miles. Was just nice to be back in the saddle (not commuting) for the first time since the festive 500.

Cold Sunday morning loop. With gale force winds so strong I was blown off the road twice.
Nice to be on the road on a crisp winter day none the least.

Somewhat to my shame I realised yesterday that I'd ridden more miles in the final week of 2013 (314) than I rode in the whole of January (252).
I did manage to run further in January (52 miles) than the final week of 2013 (37.5), so some small, bitter comfort was to be found there.
But not much.
Anyway, I decided that having committed to a number of events later this year I was now so far in the bag fitness wise as to start getting rather intimidated, so I decided to ignore my cold and get out- and what a day it was!
Crisp but fairly warm, not a cloud in the sky.
Taking my MAMIL-hood to heart I went to Richmond Park and said hello to the dear, stopped by LMNH on the way home for a coffee and then arrived at home very glad of having ridden my bike.
40 miles, very modest- but it's a start, I do after all only have 210 to do in Feb and I'll have beaten January.

A very muddy circuit of Rutland Water (outer circuit and the peninsular) with rather inappropriate Vittoria XNs on the Croix de Fer. Bib tights and top now in the washing machine after sluicing them out first in the bath. Now off to plow the bath. It's either that or cleaning it, and it's a shame to waste all that fertile soil.

Last weekend - sunny and warm but windy and very dry. As ever a marvelous route even if I was feeling like a fat old donkey.

This thread can make you a little jealous of where people get to ride, especially when it is so gloopy and horrible off road at the moment, 32 miles of gloop
http://www.strava.com/activities/110378363 and then Sunday asphalt was just to tempting http://www.strava.com/activities/110703535 I really ought to change my gearing for long road rides ;-) -

Jung, I'm riding from SF to LA in April - do you recommend taking the PCH or going through the mountains, as you have?

I'm thinking of doing Great Yarmoth to Kings Lynn (well, starting from Manningtree) along the coast. Does anyone know if there lots of flooding in the country lanes out there at the moment? Thanks for any advice!
-
• #6798
Apparently not. If they are blame my dad. What are you planning?

• #6799
Train out to Manningtree in the early a.m. then up along the NCN cycle route via Great Yarmouth and staying overnight in YHA in Sheringham. Next day out through Wells-next-the-Sea at least until Heacham and then back East to Manningtree or until I get tired and bail at a station that will take me to Manningtree.
You're welcome to come along if you fancy it! I still need to sort the hostel tho.

Are you doing this route?
http://www.bikemap.net/en/route/2088920-asparagus-strawberries-400k-audax/
North Kent. Dry with sunshine. Roads morphed into rivers. Gravel silt and crap on the dry bits. Oh and lots of huge new holes.
It was actually quite ace.
