Agree, Starhill's great I was up there yesterday just before the sleet hit.
It felt like hard work, I haven't been out riding much (!)
Last autumn I was doing Toys, Ide and Star hills in that order.
I'd have struggled yesterday.Nice one!

Went on a lead ride lead by Matteo Carrara from the Cadence Cycle mecca at the top of Crystal Palace.
A more friendly italian you could not hope to meet.. but worried by his limited english I first questioned him on his 'experience' of British roads to lead such a ride.
"well ive ridden the tour of britain twice"... this was good enough qualification for me and allowed him to continue leading the ride, only twice suggesting alternative/better routes around the hills of Kent.
Turns out rides his CV includes all three grand tours
Winner of the Tour of Luxembourg
10th in both the Milan - San Remo & Dauphine LibereGoing out again tomorrow at 9am

aye, there were plenty of pipe openers going on in my neck of the woods today as well, best brightest day of the year I reckon, talking about my neck of the woods:- no strava, garmin just flow, this is the area, with my DoE style distance measuring had a 62 k play out in the delightful new forest, i rode through 5 areas which have been running event places over last few years

For reasons too boring to go in to I needed to do 20 miles this weekend which I put off until today. My house to Richmond Park, 1 lap and then back.
To pass to time I made up a song, inspired by a gentleman I saw.
DISCLAIMER: this song is discriminatory.
*The MAMIL song (to the tune of My Old Man's a Dustman)*
Oh! Middle aged man in lycra,
He wears a Rapha hat.
He spends ten grand on cycling gear,
And still looks like a twat.
Rides only pure black carbon,
Has all the pro team kits.
And the only thing that slows him down,
Is his beer gut and his tits.Athangyewverrmuch.

^^ my slightly less poetic verison:
Finally finished the Look 595 so decided it was a good chance to act like the mamil in training that i am, and try Richmond park laps for the first time. Had a tailwind on the way there which caused me to feel confident i could break the hour mark for three laps. As soon as i started the laps and got a face full of wind i soon lost this notion, but carried on to see how slow i was. Felt reasonably good for a person who hasn't done any cycling all winter and really enjoyed the Look, as i haven't ridden gears for a year or so. Few issues with the indexing which is hopefully just from cable stretch. In the end i accidently stopped early as i thought i'd completed the three before realising i definitely hadn't; and had stopped about half a mile before the end. would have been a few minutes over the hour mark anyway.
The ride home in to the headwind and not having eaten any food wasn't a highlight.

I did a little over 100 solo kilometres in Essex this afternoon with a head wind out and tail wind back. Having taken cx tyres off my Steamroller and fitted 28s again last week it almost felt lively. With the sunlight shining Spring seemed to find a tenuous foothold. I was struck by the lack of foliage in Epping Forest though. I suppose the season is establishing itself like my form. Slowly.

I did 80km before my LH crank came clean off.
Utterly failed to bodge a get-home solution. SRAM* >>>

Went for a ride today to try out my recently acquired Garmin 705, which I got second hand from here. It's everything I hoped it would be, which is fantastic. I'm so excited about no more printing off maps and sellotaping route sheets to my stem. The only preparation needed for this ride was saving a route on the Garmin and baking some flapjacks (apricot and pumpkin seed, also awesome).
It was also the first time I've ridden anything further than just commutes and around town since winter set in, so I got my road bike out of hibernation. I've gotten even weaker and slower, and forgotten how to use gears, but it was a lot of fun.
Did 50 miles in the end, around Surrey and Sussex, which was more than enough for me especially with it being cold and windy, although it was sunny for the second half at least. Ended up in Hassocks, not getting quite as far as Brighton, which I'd intended, but I'm still pleased at how things are going.
Saw some ostriches too.
Looking forward to lots more of the same this year.

Southall, the festering sperm on the shit cupcake that is Uxbridge Road after a nice ride in the Chilterns.
Generally though, not bad out there today, bit windy but I even had my gloves off for a while to get some sun! Yes, Sun!
I love this part of the world, Betty and your garmin obviously thinks you're awesome ;)
