Having it just in front of the stem is a much more natural position for the computer to be in in terms of eyeline.

Give it a go- you'll be surprised how much nicer it is to have the ride information/navigation available to you by looking down, rather than having to move your head to bring the screen into view.

I can download routes, but im still at a loss as to how to turn on the warning sounds/ arrows. Plus im sure theres lots of cool things you can do on it but I have no clue.

Basically, no I havent.

thats to create courses, im looking for how you turn the directions on.

it's an option when you create the course I think. The settings menu is a little confusion too.

I don't know what Garmin you have, but on an 800 you go to courses, select the course you want, press the little spanner then turn on turn guidance. You might as well turn off virtual partner while you're at it.
