Endura were a Pro Continental team and the UCI can't afford to put in a biological passport program at that level. I imagine Endura's budget was small, and they wouldn't have had the funds to run a fully fledged bio passport for their riders. JTL would have known this so saying he welcomed being tested was easy for him to say, knowing that it wasn't going to happen.
    QUOTE]

Endura released a statement saying that they offered to pay for the testing (http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest/540641/jonathan-tiernan-locke-biological-passport-anomaly-former-team-issues-statement.html)

You may say that JTL able to predict that the UCI would turn around and deny this request, but that's quite a gamble to take. Though on the basis of past dopers, perhaps it is possible to see a trend of risk-seeking personalities.

JTL is not the first and will not be the last rider to have risen to prominence, seemingly from nowhere. It's easy to see this as anecdotal evidence (supported by riders like Ricco, Santambrogio, Tour of Turkey riders etc), but it is just that: anecdotal.

  • Not that I'm seeking conspiracy theories, but it's worth remembering who JTL's agent is.

  • I've forgotten.

  • Trinity Sports Management, owned by Andrew McQuaid.

  • There were theories that it was a parting gift from Pat to Cookson, but seems unlikely given his agent. So counter theories it was a way to get at Pat.

The usual suspects are using it as a way to throw mud at Sky, but really the opposite is true. He did attend a training camp with Sky in Tenerife in April 2012, but he was already winning by then. And his winning was already a subject of innuendo. What it does do is make their recruitment look questionable, hoodwinked by a rider who looks to have been doping heavily, given the contrast in the two years.

He had what, three years out due to glandular fever? Getting into his late twenties, limited time left to build his career and earn a fat contract. Break out year, fat contract at the end of it and suddenly the racehorse is a donkey, Sky realise they have a dud. I wonder if Walsh was fed the story, given he was embedded at the time. His sister, who a friend knows, certainly thinks it was a ploy by Sky to sack him, but the numbers don't lie. The BP isn't perfect ( given Horner released his data and experts have said it's suspect) but at the same time JTLs fluctuations must have been glaring.

Sad but you sort of saw it coming a way off.

  • I doubt he had the money to dope heavily, a course or two of EPO maybe but I doubt he did much more than that (assuming he is guilty).

I definitely agree that Sky should have done more homework, but I think Brailsford has already acknowledged that publicly. From what I've heard, Nathan Earle has been tested repeatedly to ensure they had a longer view of his stats and to give them confidence he's clean.

It's sad in a way, as some people I know and respect have been burnt by this, but this is pro cycling so it is hardly a surprise.

  • Trinity Sports Management, owned by Andrew McQuaid.

    Hmm... that surname sounds familiar...

  • I definitely agree that Sky should have done more homework.

    A recurring theme.

  • Indeed. For a team that pride themselves on their holistic approach, it beggars belief that they are so naive when it comes to recruitment.

  • Genuine shock that it took TV 10 hours to come on with the usual 'Sky are all dopers' schtick.

  • CX world champ Sven Nys would welcome a retest of all professional cyclists' samples from the past 5 years now a test for Aicar has been developed.

  • What's that skippy? Michael Rogers positive for clenbuterol at the Japan Cup.

  • Oopsies. Cue lots of joke about Contador serving him steak.

I have little doubt he was at it when he was at Sky too

  • I'd be surprised if he doped at Sky and, despite what the twitterati might have you believe, there is no evidence to back your claim.

He'd just ridden the Tour of Beijing so I'd expect a defence based on food contamination, which may be reasonable given the well documented use of clenbuterol in Chinese farming.

  • Oopsies. Cue lots of joke about Contador serving him steak.

It's not time to wagyu finger at him yet. Wait for the b sample.

  • And given how well documented that is, and given who his team leader is, how stupid would you have to be to eat any beef, or any other meat, over there?

  • I'd be surprised if he doped at Sky and, despite what the twitterati might have you believe, there is no evidence to back your claim.

He'd just ridden the Tour of Beijing so I'd expect a defence based on food contamination, which may be reasonable given the well documented use of clenbuterol in Chinese farming.

Mentioned in the Bertagnolli affidavit, ex-client of Ferrari's, multiple World Time Trial Champion, claimed he was in the best form ever while riding for Sky, ushered out of Sky after team members asked to sign a declaration they had never doped despite being their most experienced road captain.

Conjecture of course but it is very likely he has doped in the past, doped his way to those ITT WCs, and unless you are on board with the marginal gains guff it's hard to see how he could be riding better while at Sky if he was clean. Doesn't matter a great deal, if he was I'm certain he was doing it independently of the Sky team and he's been popped while at Saxo anyway.

  • ...how stupid would you have to be to eat any beef, or any other meat, over there?

    Unbelievably!

It's pretty easy to get details of beef's provenance these days. Even if you're steak noshing aussie who eats sirloin for breakfast.

  • Matt Brammeier said 50% of the peloton was getting stuck into the hotel buffet in China

  • Well that will be certainly be the defence then. To make it believable we need a raft of positives not just Roger's

  • That will depend on whether anyone was Kobeing Rogers' actions.

  • I suppose I would probably consider doping, given the tail end of a career dogged by illness and a top flite team to impress . It's an easy scalp from the sidelines but I guess a lot more complex and pragmatic when you're on your arse and looking to put food on the table

Professional sport at any level is all about the dollar.
