  • I hope he goes to prison for a long time in order to protect society from him and in order to show that such actions are not acceptable and will be punished. I hope that he sees that what he has done is worng and seeks the forgiveness of his victim's family.

I also hope that the unnecessary death that he has caused will somehow affect the minds of other irrational drivers and prevent them from such heinous acts in the future.

  • Always amazes me how if you kill someone in a car you can get 'pretty much' away with it.

Wasn't there a story a few weeks ago about the women who was pregnant, ran a man off the road and didn't stop but still got away with it.

The law really needs fucking changing. I hate to think what I'd do if that poor cyclist was a relation of mine.

    +1!

  • When I've reported incidents, I don't like the whole 'was there any contact made?' attitude.

Like they'd ask that if someone tried to shoot me, but missed by less than a foot.

    Anyway…

  • Sometimes I wish driving tests included a rigorous psychometric profiling component.

you saying that has kinda made me agree, it's amazing that you can pass a test and be allowed to drive around in a huge battering ram without any checks made on your mental stability

  • I can't speak for anyone else, but when I look back over 20-odd years of cycling as an adult, there have been at least half a dozen occasions when I've found myself in similar situations - although they've not been for clipping vehicles, but have been due to asserting my rights as a road user by taking primary position, or in more heated moments, doing it verbally.

Each time, there's been that rush of adrenalin you'd expect when you're being hunted. It's primal. And hunted seems to be the apt word. It's not being overly dramatic to envision death at the hands of a crazed loon as a possible outcome. The media provides us with proof at depressingly regular intervals.

Completely agree. My road rides consist of narrow roads, no pavements and blind bends. Pretty much every other ride I will get grief from a driver who doesn't realise that I am in the middle of the road because I can hear cars coming in the other direction into a blind bend. They are put out because they can't overtake going into said blind bend and even after the bend (when you would think they would be thankful for me helping them to avoid hitting an oncoming car) they shout, sound horn etc,.
With that sort of disregard they should not be allowed to drive at all.

Completely agree with this as well. The amount of times I've had motorists come round a bend behind me only to slam the brakes on because I'm cycling in the road. As far as I'm aware being a driver you should have your eyes on the road the whole time and be ready to stop at any time. They then usually over take when It's really not safe and give me grief for it as if I've done something wrong.

  • "Fitzgerald, a factory worker, handed himself in to police and admitted colliding with Mr Webb. "

i think we getting carried away, developing bias criticism and discrimination.
sad-looking. larger man. smoker vs happy. smiling. green cyclist

i am trying not to take sides as i think there is more to the story then mediated and believe it was small accident that got carried away. that fact still remaing the driver followed and rammed the cyclysit i would expect a serious sentance to be passed in the end.

  • Scary that psychos like this are out there in everyday life.
If he doesn't get a driving ban for life and a really long prison sentence then it just shows how much of a joke this countries court system is.

There are plenty of *people about holding down responsible and repectful lives - normal people if you like - who still think its acceptable to intimidate (eg drive past a cyclist really closely to 'make him wobble a bit ha ha' )

    • like the cunt thats sitting at the desk opposite me at this very moment.

Let's look at it another way. A man sitting in a metal case with a poweful engine aims his vehicle at a man sitting on a couple of tubes of metal with no protection. A bit like a man with a gun shooting at a naked man. If you have a powerful and dangerous tool, you must use it responsibly. Aiming at someone, even if just to scare them is, at best reckless and at worst murder. We know he hit and killed the cyclist and tried to cover his tracks. I don't really care if the cyclist was a nasty BNP member with body odour and an appearance on the nonce register. The actions of the driver were wrong.

Some drivers talk about intimidating cyclists, or driving really close to them on purpose, "to teach them a lesson."

That's no different to holding a cocked shotgun to someone's head with your finger resting on the trigger. One slip of the finger and they're dead, but somehow it's only cyclists who seem to understand this.

Yes I know it's a repeat of what probably about 10 people above me have said but I like to reiterate.

  • He will turn it all round in his head as he fights off the sweaty late night advances of his cellmate, Crusher Bates.
He will blame the cyclist, the system, the media, society, in fact anyone but himself. If he is convicted of murder he will only serve 7 years (provided that he is a good boy) and by the time he comes out his driving ban will have expired.
He may loose job, family etc but he will have the chance to build a new life and enjoy love, a pint, a sunset.
    He denied the cylist this.
Call me old fashioned but I'd like to see him swing.

  • This is shit. And it was in my home town as well! I hope the driver is repeatedly violated whilst in prison.

  • You didn't read it properly. Killer has children, victim had a cat.

He mounted the pavement to get the cyclist. Is the rest of any importance? A little drunk tho.

can i do that to him in my truck?

But what lesson does it teach? What is the intended action supposed to teach?

  • I don't know. I'm a driver but I'm yet to have such a retarded idea as almost killing a cyclist to teach them a lesson. I have no idea what this lesson may be. Probably the get out of way lesson.

I'm a driver and I always give cyclists plenty of room, probably because I know how much I fucking hate it when I can feel a car going past me.

I really don't know what some motorists have against cyclists I experience it day in day out, when you cycle through one of these:

And motorists get right up your ass (not exaggerating there) and they can't wait to get around you, can you seriously not leave 5-10 minutes earlier in the morning so your not so fucking angry when you drive?

  • We are indicative of the general public. But next time some one says the teach a lesson, ask just to see what stupid answer they come up with.

(All I can see it teaching is that the driver is inconsiderate)

  • Bloody hell. I've smashed someones wing mirror accidentally before. I can only thank my lucky stars it was some big black dude in Brixton and not Sean(I'm fucking psychotic)Fitzgerald - what an absolute...... I can't even come up with an appropriate word.

  • The accused is obviously a lunatic.
London in full of potential lunatics so remember folks the next time a minor incident occurs and you damage some ones wing mirror, you do not have the right to just cycle off into the distance.
I'm sorry but the victim antagonised the situation by riding off.

  • Bad Troll is just a bit rubbish.

  • Well I was going to bite but can't be arsed.
