you do need them, and you will also love the ability to pull up on the pedals when going up hill.
-
• #78
I can pull up on the pedals. The same technique anyone would use on an mtb with flat pedals.
Any other reasons?
-
• #79
Try it someday, if you fall off it's because you're shit.
Either that or because the cog will unscrew if you slow down / stop without using the brake.

I prefer not to thanks. It just means thinking ahead a little more. As I say, get the right technique and It can be used efficiently. I do have to use the brake more than those with straps but it's my choice. I prefer not to spent money I don't have on something I don't need
when you ride a fixed wheel bicycle you need strap, you're just saying that because you don't want to get used to flipping the pedal and sliding your feet in the cage, and thereforth claim it's 'better' that way.
I made the same error, end up getting foot retention, much much better and realise how stupid it was to ride without foot retention.
HTFU.

how can you pull up without being attached to the pedal?
-
• #82
Point your toes down and pull back, it's shit but works a bit.
-
• #83
thought you'd poke your nose in
-
• #84
I never said riding without strap was better. It's just the way that I do things. Nothing to do with having to flip the pedal to get your foot in. I am used to doing that anyway.

oz.
just go to a bike shop, ask them if they have any discarded cheap plastic cage and fabric strap (possibly for free).
install them.
then learn how to ride.
-
• #86
I. Don't. Want. Them. Don't you get it?
I know how to ride thanks.
-
• #87
Okay, what's your address?
I have some lying around for you to installed on your bike, so I'll post a plastic cage, some strap and bolts to attach the cage to your pedals.
Hopefully you'll be able to learn how to ride a bike.

you are a gem mr squabbles
see you monday?

Let see what the missus' says, she sometime not quite keen on hanging out with lots of cycling nerds.
-
• #90
there are real people coming along too
-
• #91
not just weirdos who only know each other by avatar and forum name
thankfully oz is not invited - he would not be able to contribute to any sensible or humorous conversation
-
• #92
but he can 'pull' up on a pedal without foot retention... thats got to be worth something....
maybe he has 'sticky feet' ???
-
• #93
Oh he just did a Jamaican skid, not exactly a comfortable way to 'skid', especially when the pedal is on the top of your feet.
edit - sound more like a bunny hop, in which case not exactly an idea way to slow down!
-
• #94
DJ - quite glad I'm not invited.
Ed - If you want to travel 120miles to put on some shitty straps then you're welcome. Otherwise I'm happy to let you keep thinking you're right.
Why skid? Waste of good tyre.
-
• #95
What? don't you have Royal Mail where you're at?
Don't let the pedal hit your legs on the way out.
-
• #96
If you sent them to me I wouldn't put them on so it would be a pointless waste of time and money.
-
• #97
so what's the address?
I'm just doing this for your safety and ineptly, that is all.
-
• #98
Are you sure you're just doing this for safety. It looks more like you're trying to prove that I'm wrong and that you way is the only way.
Did an alleycat on them last night btw. Despite all the hills and the apparent fact that it isn't physically possible to pull up on flat pedals, I still got a decent place.
If you have tried riding as I do then I may accept your words of bullshit. But as you know nothing of me then I will just accept the fact that you live in a fantasy world

It's not my way actually, it's the sensible way as having two brakes on a freewheel bicycle.
even Sheldon Brown strongly recommend you to ride with foot retention, have a look;
Sometimes, novice fixed-gear riders will try to use plain pedals with no form of retention system. I strongly advise against this.
Now, what's your address again?
-
• #100
Freewheel bicycle? Where did the freewheel come in?
So I should listen to Sheldon Brown because? His locking method has been proven wrong? Or because I like to use his gear calculator?
You're not giving me any real reasons as to why I shouldn't ride like I do. Generalising and saying that I can't ride a bike or that it's not safe is just a way to lose an argument and for me to sit her laughing at you
oz, you're a Muppet. What your saying is completely idiotic and as such, i have no more to say to you.
