Great games all round, thanks everyone.
Same time and place next week.

Hey Wicksie, thanks for sending me over here, I'll aim to join you next week if you're playing. Can i ask a stupid question first if I promise I've already UTFS? I only have a single speed - not a fixed gear - would that work just for a first try, or should I get hold of a fixie before I come?
-
• #154
alot of people use singlespeed now, so you can adjust your legs accordingly to the shot
as long as you have brakes then thats fine, and a spinny gearnot that i know ought
-
• #155
Yup, any bike is fine. A few people were on their geared bikes so whatever you have is fine.
If you have time and want to know the ins and out of starting, then
http://www.lfgss.com/thread14461.html
and further reading on safety here:
http://www.lfgss.com/thread46731.htmlA synopsis of these are basically, low gearing if you're making a polo bike, brake on the opposite side you're using for a mallet, and you MUST cap your bar ends else it's dangerous.
Other than that, no worries.
PM me your number just in case it gets canceled for any reason, and let me know if you want to borrow a mallet.Easy, see you next week!

the picture above reminds me of wests a year ago! :)

Pity I had company coming yesterday afternoon, had no idea this was going on but managed to bump into one of you on the way for a quick SE Beer, then stopped by the court on way back!
I have a steel frame beater gerared bike I was building up as a commuter, but it might have to become a polobike for a bit, now... Just no idea where I will get risers that fit its stem and a smaller front chainring.
Will come along next week regardless, to watch.
-
• #158
No watching allowed, sorry. You must join in, irrespective of gearing. ;)
Move your brake lever to the opposite side of your mallet hand, and you're away.
What size risers do you need?Nice to bump in to you last night matey. See you next week!

What fun yesterday!
Thanks guys. Having been to downhams to watch the frenetically skilled league guys it is brilliant having the chance to enjoy polo without feeling too hopeless
What i love about this scene is how encouraging and patient people are
thanks for posting the picture wicksie

That court looks inviting.
Good work on getting these sessions going Joni.

Whats the surface like?

Whats the surface like?
A little rough, but ok. There are a few holes on one of the sides, where we occasionally lost the ball, but we are looking at filling them with something.

Skydancer, you're a natural so not much patience required at all!
The court is a little bobbly (as well as 1 or 2 holes) so I'm really keen to get some red balls for this as the orange ones are too bouncy. But it's nice to have the walls and there are street lamps all round it which might provide enough light.
Cheers Mat, I'm pleased we've finally got numbers. I've got 15 people on the books so if they all turn up it'll be a cracking day!

Low centre of gravity. :)
I'd love to come to one of these sessions, but I still need to give it some time for non-mallet handlebar-holding elbow-healing before I can participate fully. Still don't have a polo bike or mallet, but I'll get there.

awww cheers wicksie
being a cycle trainer and spending hours a day on my bike does hone your bike control skills. Jeaniejeanjean and i were thinking about how good it woul be to introduce polo to the young people we teach in schools. Would really help them develop excellent riding skills
has anyone approached any schools offering polo?

There have been a few initiatives with children but nothing permanent set up. We have an association for this very reason:
http://www.lhbpa.org/Oliver, very welcome when you're healed. I have mallets a plenty for anyone who wants to try it, just drop me a PM before the session and I'll bring you a loaner.

Halfway there. :)

Most of the surface is actually pretty good, it's just along one wall there are some holes in the tamac, one or two big enought to hide a ball in...
Gent what BCD cranks do you have?
Sky, I think rik tried to get something going at his school, but I do think it would be easier to set up if a real cycle instructor were to be the one doing the approaching! :)
-
• #170
I did not, my HT will never allow our kids to hold a mallet at the same time that ride a bike...
it will be more like a battle in the Middle Age than a polo game -

Cheers khornight, We'll have a think and speak to lhbpa (and Rik) and see if we can get something together to put to schools

Rubber mallets ftw!
Gent has one piece cranks so needs some new ones, some risers, brake lever and possible a rear wheel.
