  • Something needs to be done, this is absolutely unacceptable!

Absolutely! Why oh why are cars, busses and HGVs allowed through Oxford Street during this massive construction project?? It's complete mayhem around there!

RIP: what a complete and utter waste of life.

ref planning : http://www.cyclestreets.net gives you fast/balanced/quiet routes,

    Ref Guerilla Signs/alternate routes

I've contacted Colin who heads up Westminster cyclists and he says:
"Despite the campaign to change the signs at Oxford Circus banning cyclists from entering Oxford Street, using this street cannot really be recommended. As you say, there are parallel routes to the north and south. Going west, you can turn off left at Berwick Street and then use Noel Street, Great Marlborough Street, Maddox Street and Grosvenor Street. You cannot currently follow this route eastbound, but there is a package of complementary measures in the Cycle Hire scheme to provide an eastbound route. Alternatively you can turn off right at Newman Street and then follow Eastcastle Street, Margaret Street, Henrietta Place and Wigmore Street. Unfortunately neither of these avoids the stretch of Oxford Street where the cyclist was killed. Going east, you are better off north of Oxford Street, using Wigmore Street and Mortimer Street."

I agree with the east route (Wigmore/Mortimer) when crossing to the far east. The rest, check it out, get the graphic designers going...

  • How about a Critical Mass-style ride through town during the DAY, to highlight all the casualties? Bring the place to a standstill and get the issue in the news...

  • Have a hundred people at each junction where someone has died this year. Block the roads and publicise it.

CM is no longer news worthy so we have to come up with novel protests that will attract attention

  • Not turning out to be a great year for cycling in London.

Not necessarily true. Without meaning to sound glib or sully the condolences, there will be more accidents as a result of more people choosing to use bicycles.

If you need to ride the bottle neck stretch then DO NOT STICK TO THE LEFT!!!!! Saty in the position behind the drivers.

    +100

  • RIP Unknown lady cyclist. My thoughts with the friends and family.

This. Some sort of blockage. A blockade will only work with enough people though... With the right publicity and support, this could work, as a protest...

  • Although it would only get people's backs up on the day, it would at least bring it to wider attention (and probably, if done soon enough, would be another bandwagon for the politicians to jump on...)

  • That traffic through oxford street is completely unnecessary. The buses should pick up
    passengers at each end.

Thanks muchly, will check it out.

  • Again, people are too inflexible about their routes. Take a longer route! And enjoy your ride more.

Yeah man, I commute from London Fields to Soho every day, but I take the canal all the way to angel to avoid the roads. I do have to deal with Holborn/Leicster Square traffic, but to be honest it's really not that bad! But I'd avoid it if I could.

Sad news and it's so close to where I work it's scary!

  • RIP. Sad news indeed.

  • RIP.

my thoughts with friends and family.

  • tragic news and condolences to the family. Have avoided going up Charing Cross Road/TCR due to the roadworks but that junction is chaos anyway

  • Guerrilla signs to recommend other routes? hmmmm

good idea until someone has a serious or fatal accident on said other recommended routes....

then the cyclist-haters have a field day as a finger is pointed at the sign-makers.

    i wouldn't.

  • RIP

bus drivers need to take it easy its getting ridiculous

  • Rode pass the Bus top this morning. Flowers. Pictures. Very sad. Strikes me as a perfect position for a "ghost bike". It could be locked to the bus stop itself. In terms of making people aware it's such a prime location. A bus stop on on London's busiest shopping street. I have an old frame.. Wheels anyone? Stem? Handle bars? Locks?

Some really upsetting accounts in that

I went past there again last night and this morning as always and still can't understand how this happened. Straight bit of road, one lane of traffic now due to roadworks. For the driver to 'just lose concentration' is absolutely horrific!

There's loads of flowers laid at the spot now

Please send condolences (i'm sure I speak for all). Looking at her website makes it more so very, very tragic.

  • When I rode past this morning Old bill were there with theodolite taking measurements
