• Just noticed you can see the flea shit and pupae on my clean white shirt. Lovely.

Apparently no additional treatment for four weeks and no bath for another week. Back to vacuuming, washing, fumigating and itching.

Taking the day off tomorrow and will start work on operation poop-outside.

  • Oooooft, that's so tough. Really sorry to hear it. Really good work rescuing Margot though, you've saved a life!

  • Most flea treatments brands only say to wait 48 hours before washing on the packet - I don't see any reason to wait a week. And next time, see if you can get pill-based treatment (eg Simparica) so you don't have this problem.

If there are eggs around you'll continue to see live fleas for as long as it takes for them to hatch, get poisoned and die. The numbers should steadily reduce though.

    Fleas suck. Good luck.

  • Thanks dudes. She’s a trooper. Grrr

  • Margot update: day 7.

She's absolutely thriving and being the goodest girl. She's still tiny and stinky and a bit flea-bit and I can't wait to finally give her a bath, but there are a fraction of of the bitey little feckers on her now and she's gone from 800 to 900g in a weeks and I think we've managed to control the infestation with a "take off and nuke it from orbit" apprach to pest control inclding the washing machine and drier being on almost 24/7.
She can't hit the ground in public for another couple of weeks but yesterday she was introduced to our very small garden. I honestly don't think I ever seen a happier animal. gambolling doesn't even cover it. It's altogeter lovely.

  • Great news. Photos tho - I'm keeping my wife up to date on Margot progress...

  • I’m sorry, but you shouldn’t really be putting poor little Margot in the washer dryer.
    Glad she’s settled in ok.

  • Anyone want a labrador? 11 months old, loves eating shit, dislikes listening.

  • Give it 3-4 months, all that'll stop - quite amazingly quickly...

  • I lost Obi in the park this morning, as he was too interested in chasing squirrels than listening to me, and the little bugger ran home alone, including crossing the high street.

  • Bloody hell. We had a couple of labs when I was a kid and this was one of their signatures moves. Fuck off in to a field chasing something, disappear and then be waiting at the front door after I'd spent an hour looking for her.

  • Sounds heartstopping. Can't imagine letting the pup out of my sight for a second at the moment.

Thanks for the encouragement all. It's been a week today. It has been quite hard going, but I never thought it was gonna be an *looks to camera - walk in the park - so i'm pretty sanguine about the sleeplessness and the War on Bugs(TM) in general. My missus is really struggling though. It may be all wrapped up in the family mess but for whatever reason she's experiencing high anxiety just not coping terribly well - then spiralling because she gets anxious her anxiety meaning that's not coping etc. It's all a bit trying but i'm determined to keep a calm head and be the voice of positivity.

Must admit I did struggle last night standing outside on the patio in my pants for the umpteenth time waiting for the pup to pee, only to have her run back inside and pee then try to get into my camp bed.

On toilet training, I think we're admitting that we're expecting too much too quickly. She can only go an hour max without needing to pee for the first half of the night, so unless one of us is up every 45 minutes until around 2 or 3am we're gonna have to try something else. Also trying to convince a baby animal the size of a guinea pig to leave her cozy bed and go outside in the night time autumn drizzle to pee isn't proving easy (hence the standing on the patio in my pants last night).

As we want to start transitioning away from being in the room, we're gonna put a pen round the crate with a pad in it and try sleeping on the sofa-bed on the next floor up from the basement kitchen where crate is tomorrow. We shall see. Any top tips on manging night time toilet training tiny pups very welcome.

  • A 10-week-old puppy can usually hold their bladder for about one hour:
8–10 weeks: Puppies this age can usually only hold their bladder for one hour or less.
10–12 weeks: Bladder capacity increases, but most puppies can still only hold it for about two hours.
3–6 months: Puppies can usually hold it for one hour per month of age, so a three-month-old puppy can hold it for three hours.
6 months to 1 year: Puppies can usually hold it for four to six hours.
Over 6 months: Puppies can usually hold it for six to eight hours.
Puppies need to go to the bathroom more often than adult dogs, and their bladders aren't fully developed yet. Here are some tips for helping your puppy learn to hold their bladder:
Take them outside frequently: Take your puppy outside to go to the bathroom every hour during waking hours.
Look for signs: Look for signs that your puppy needs to go, such as sniffing, circling, or hunching their back.
Reward them: Reward your puppy when they go to the bathroom in the right place.
Have a routine: Have a puppy potty routine so you can anticipate when they need to go.
Use a crate: Crate training can help because animals don't like to go to the bathroom where they sleep.

    AI overview there.
    But it looks like:
As soon as they wake up, get them outside or on their pad. Have the pen split in two, one side the bed the other side toilet.

I think I slept downstairs for nearly a month with Bailey. And when she's EATEN ALL THE FUCKING SHIT AND IS NOW SHITTING THROUGH THE EYE OF NEEDLE I end up sleeping downstairs as it's easier to manage. Bit like I did with the kids.

  • I really hope you have 2 dogs and this is Obi 1.

  • Oh little cutie! (Margot’s ok too)
You could give puppy pads or a series of old towels a try. It’s not ideal, but at least she will be able to go to toilet when she needs to. Rather than tell you before she knows she does and then mess as she waits for you to catch up. Once she has the hang of using the pad remove the inside one and finally she’s waiting at the door and going on the grass.

  • How beautiful, what breed, Al?

  • Oh I’ll admit I have zero experience with puppies, always had rescues. At least with little ones the mess is smaller…

  • Pulling ticks off my dog nearly daily at the moment. Just got two off her whilst sitting in a cafe. One was attached to her nipple!

  • Ridiculous creature

  • Ugh, I was getting up every two hours when we first got our little one. I didn't get a full night's sleep for 4/5 months, it was fucking exhausting, had just started my own business and we'd both just been sick with covid for the first time. How the fuck did we cope??

@Dooks-Fatberg Just read the rest of your posts, tragic circumstances but you've got a little treasure out of the situation. Hope you're all doing well, mate.

Here's our little fella, Monkey, at 9 weeks, my favourite pic of him as a puppy and on the weekend after a 10kms+ of walkies day.

  • Have you got her on Nexgard or Simparica tablets? Ticks are bad news!

  • She was actually getting a really high (s)hit rate on the pad inside the back door during the day and hasn’t had to poop at night since the second night which is great. I have a feeling that taking her outside may have confused her a bit. Think we’ll give pad in a pen a go at night from tomorrow.

Thanks Joe! She’s mutt! Half mystery terrier (was told mother was a border but she looked more like a Norfolk or maybe even a mix herself) and the dad is a small cocker spaniel. She’s gonna be a handful!

  • She looks like a wookie! Love it!
