generally because they had too much praise as a child and then went through an education system where it is hard to fail and where you will never be criticised or shouted at.
while this can help people express themselves it often leads to mediocrity and the herd mentality of praising when saying 'fuck off that's shit' would perhaps lead to something better.

love this thread, skating around on lifestyle aspirations, why people think stuff is cool, not cool,..
Klein wrote about all this shit years ago in "no logo". Several others have done it too way better than I could since.
So far no-one has spoken up for the brand of bikes, but I imagine they are the like of which are ridden about mainly by people with fairly shit bike handling skills, because they just got into 'the scene' with one of these new otps, and didnt ride much if anything with 2 wheels before that.

this is bang on^ skilled riding/ climbing/ surfing takes years of practice, but the whole concept of apprenticeship, practice and learning something over time is rendered invisible by ads like the OP

This is a bit more conjectural by me admittedly, working in schools you see increasing intervention by outsiders installing "chill out zones" and the like,
mollycoddling them whilst at the same time treating them like young adults,
not children. When they need strong leadership, and honesty about the world, thats why I always tell them to HTFU.

'Haters' is a term that gets right on my tit ends. It's so fucking American. As soon as you criticise something that is as ridiculous as a bloke using his shoes to stop his bike, you're labelled a 'hater'.

Couldn't agree more, bloody horrendous. It's even worse when combined with 'on' to create the verb to 'hate on'. Language that is truly the remit of rednecks and sheeple.

Where's the fun in watching somebody ride eight feet then stop at the first set of lights to call the police because some nasty car driver has driven too close to them?

the last person to do this to me is currently suspended from their driving job with a view to being dismissed, the police are considering prosecuting too

i think this would actually be quite reassuring for a lot of cyclists
