First dropped camera experience today. Luckily it was just the beater 450D with the pancake lens (as above) but it hit pavement and bounced a surprising amount. Quite a few scuffs but everything's still working perfectly. I think the only way of killing this camera would be to completely submerge it.

Ok, so you already know I'm a fan of Ming Thein, sorry for posting yet another link to his site - but I really think this might be interesting / informative, or even illuminative for some of the digital gear geeks:

Have you seen the digital rev video where they crash test a 7D? They even froze it in a cube of ice and it still worked after in I remember correctly

Yeah! 7Ds are hard as fuck. Such a funny video that, too. They should do one with the mkii.

Good to hear it still works. -

Can somebody recommend a cable release with a really long cable (like: more than 3m) for a Nikon D3?

For @photoben and @miro_o (belatedly) I really like the Canon powershot S series (S120?) as recommended by tina.
I've got the S95 and it takes great photos, but two stand out features for me are that it has two manual control rings which you can set to do different things (focus/aperture/zoom) which makes it easy to adjust on the fly, and a smaller thing is that when shooting RAW you can also set the size of JPG it records, so you can generate RAW+JPG thumbnails easily

I wouldn't. Get these, they are great for the price, and double up as a wireless flash trigger.

Cheers, I was looking at the S120. The colour rendition in Canon is always great. I have fond memories of my old IXUS.

Very good. Thank you!

FYI: Just like most stuff from China, the quality control can be a bit off. I bought two pairs and one out of the four didn't work. But I sent it back and had a working replacement within a week.

Also, I think you'd quite happily get A2 prints from the Canon. Obviously it wont compare to a DSLR or something bigger, but for the size/price the quality is pretty decent. Its no worse than my (now pretty ancient) 450d

Re wireless triggers, I bought some phottix strato IIs a while ago and they're great. Rechargeable batteries last ages in them and they've never skipped a beat, plus you can add groups of receivers which they sell seperately. They also work on my X100 so I can use the canon flash wirelessly with ridiculous sync speeds in daylight.
Get wireless ones, dont fuck about with a cable!

Thank you for your input as well!
Those phottix look a bit more solid - alas three times the price of the Yongnuo.
Haven't even looked at the details concearning flash capabilities; I can't see myself using this any time soon.
