Would be good to decide how compact you need it
I'm backpacking so the smaller the better. It doesn't need to be smart phone size but I want it to be unobtrusive and to be able to put it in a small day bag without compromising on the rest of the contents. A second lense (if needed) would likely stay in my main bag to be brought out in specific circumstances where I would suck up the extra hassle/space.
if you really can live with one (fixed) lens / zoom
Honestly I don't know. I think the majority of the time it will be unnecessary, but if I go the the Antarctic and want to photograph polar bears* will I be kicking myself?
*joking
how much you can spend of course.
That's a good question. Like everyone I'd like value for money and I'm happy to go second hand. The max I would spend is £800 in total. I like the idea of spending as close to £250 as possible after Ed pointing out the x20.
Mentally I was thinking of £350-400.

Canon G16 or G1X (non-Mark II) might be a good option.

You would want a decent telephoto for that.
Maybe something that works off satellites too. -

Really nice!
Is there a bit of perspective correction going on?
-
• #6957
Danke. Its one of the rare occasions where its pretty much untouched apart from a preset. No perspective fiddling.

Very cool, I've always wanted to be able to people watch from my desk. The range of emotions are great. The guy by the lamppost on the left is probably my favourite, closely followed by the man who's amused/baffled by the Standard.

Lamppost guy and the woman in the middle who looks disgusted are my faves.
Didn't realise there was a dog in there too... -

Aha, yeah, I think she's just seen the dog and couldn't bear to take another look...

2 is good advice, may just run it into the ground
And mv, yes! Its quite tight to me though and the dtrap is very mildly elasticy which makes it easier to swing round but harder for it to move alone

Went to the nocturne yesterday, it gave me a good excuse to test out my new canon 40mm pancake. Such a nice lens, there seems to be an infinite supply of them on ebay too. I ended up paying around £80 shipped for mine new in box.

Edit: Decided I should crop the first black and white pic too.

Wicked set. How you liking the lens?
The FUJIs mentioned are good cameras, albeit they're famous for great people colours -
if it's mainly landscapes you're going to do you might want another brand.
