I am trying to upgrade the firmware of my camera, put a new freshly formatted SDHC card in, connected it to my pc, but when I try to drag the .bin file on to the memory cards root folder it says its copy protected. I have not locked the card on the external switch, and there aren't any obvious security setttings on the camera that I can see that are enabled. Any ideas?

"Any ideas ?" Mine would be for you to supply as many clues as you can as to your camera make, model, operating system (etc).
You could simply tell us what camera you have, but if it's a secret then some hints and clues would go along way, maybe start with the manufacturer if you don't want to go the whole way on a first date.
I could set about telling you about an anomaly with the Canon 550D when trying to upgrade the firmware, but I might be wasting my time typing it out in detail as you might not have a 550D (then again you might) . . . who knows ?
(you).

No problem, it's a Panasonic GF1 (with version 1.0 firmware), a brand new SanDisk SDHC Extreme HD 16GB card, Windows 7 and the upgraded firmware is v1.3. I also tried to add the file via a mac to see if that made a difference, and I tried dragging photos taken with the camera back onto the new card, all of which brought up the "this card is copy protected..."

after wanting a dslr for a few year I have just brought one! After being totally bewildered by the amount of choice I decided on a nikon D80 due to finding one at cash converters and the guy accepting my offer.
Now i just need to learn how to use the thing, i've spent the day watching youtube tutorials which has helped and am now thinking about getting a DVD off the ebay (good idea?)
Also i'm not sure if the lens it came with is any good or not. Its a tamron 28-300mm I will be taking photos of sports as well as portraits/close ups and thought a smaller lens may be better?
Oh the joy of a new toy :) -

First things first, stick it on auto mode and go and and use it, just to get used to the feel of it and what it gives you in comparison to what you think you see though the viewfinder. Shoot anything and everything (except little kids in the nuddy cos that makes you a nonce).
Once you've had a summer pissing about filling your memcard with a stack of shite and a few good lucky shots, pick up a copy of Floodlight and see about getting on a short evening course to help you get to grips with the finer detail. It may cost more than a DVD off ebay but will be so much better value for money.

i'd familiarise yourself with the basics regarding shutter speed, aperture and ISO settings, have a read through these articles (or others if you google it!), and good luck!

After abit of advice,
I need to take shots everyday in a building that is been renovated.
The lighting in the building is pretty non existant at the moment and It's a pretty large space.
All I have to take the pics is a Sony dslr with a 18-70mm lens.
My plan was just to take the photos on a tripod in the same spot everyday with a slow shutter speed. Other than messing around for the first day taking alot of variations is there anything that could help me out here? -

when using the tripod and longer exposures, i always find it best to use the self-timer too, so i can take a step away from it and let go - as my hands always manage to cause a bit of shake letting go of the camera on the tripod.

Should also use mirror lock, stops the very small vibration from the mirror.

Self timer, a wtf didn't I think of that before thing. Thanks.
My model has no coventional mirror lock thanks. -

First trial,
Realised a few improvements to make as soon as I saw them on a large screen and I had pre coffee
brain meltdown trying to remember how to use one of the functions.

They've got another London show on August 26th, hoping to play a full set after the OBL was cut short.
Think the venue's TBC due to a double booking of the place they had first. -

Have posted this in the classifieds as well but thought someone here might be interested:
**Canon EOS 60D (and all accs), Sigma 18-50 (T2.8) EX Zoom, Genuine Canon spare battery and intervalometer
**
£850Bought this 3 months ago for a couple of jobs which evaporated into thin air and now i am not really using it and would like to by one of these new fangled 4/3" chip cameras to give me some creative control but have something which is easier to carry.
So good as new really, less than 500 snaps i reckon with boxes & documentation.
Lens is 2nd hand but in perfect condition (UV filter, caps & case inc.), fast and a good range for an EF-S chip camera.
Genuine canon spare battery (both batteries only charged twice each) plus charger.
Cheap and cheerful intervalometer which does the job.Near London fields (can deliver/meet within reason).
DIbs if you want but you gotta PM/Contact as well.

OMG F***ing BARGAIN!
Great lens too. -

I agree!!
I just find that what i want to do is to take pics when i am out cycling so it is just to bulky to carry around in my bag and as a result it isn't getting the use it deserves. Lots of folks i know have got Olympus PENS, Lumix GFs etc and they are what i fancy now....
Sounds like a safe bet.
