I'm considering getting a 100D for its compact size, however last time I had a dSLR I had the standard 50 1.8, but found it a bit too long
are there any cheaper worth looking at than the 35mm f2
Why SLR?

Why not Zoidberg ?
fucking stupid name in this country
never understood the multiple naming for the same models
..not sure whether to find it more idiotic to call a camera *REBEL *instead of 100D, or (as FUJI do) THE SEXY ONE instead of X-E1.
100D with the 40mm pancake is a really great low budget DSLR-setup !

Makes sense, apparently the canon 7D will be announced in May so Nikon will want to steal some thunder. Hopefully its not just a D7100 with a bigger buffer.

I really hope it would be a proper "D400". I was just about to change camps, but might wait and see how that D9300 will turn out to be.

Actually a friend of mine has very differnet experience with him and he worships him. It was a few years ago when I was doing research for my, well, research paper. Contacted a number of photographers, famous and not famous including Martin Parr and Simon Norfolk. They either got back to me to say they are happy to help, or they are very busy but can spare 5 mins and no more etc, or just simply ignored me. Mr Parr, replied to me within 24 hours with an essay long reply saying how busy he is, how many students would contact him on a daily basis, and if he spends time replying to everyone and offers help to everyone then he will have no time to do his own work etc. Can't remember the exact content of the email, but it was not far from telling me off for contacting him, and if he could write that long an email with list of reasons why he can't answer a few simple questions, surly he'd have the time to just answer a couple of questions? Told my tutors about my experience and was told, "yap, we have heard it all..."
Then went for a talk a while after that, he is nothing but an arrogant asshole.
Simon Norfolk is a very very nice guy on the other hand.
However, the biggest jerk of all has to be Rankin. Oh yes, I have a few interesting stories about him.
i've heard that about Parr too, my uncle used to a bit of work with him, apparently he once told him to call him back later because he was eating a yoghurt.

Off the back of a student emailing him Parr came to our college to talk to us (granted I'm pretty sure the college paid to fly him up to Glasgow and put him up in a hotel but still) and a few years later donated a print to the auction we did to raise funds for our degree show.
We also got a massive, framed print from Colin Prior though so maybe we just had all the chat.
Wish I could remember the name of the guy that came to do a talk and basically told us that any photography commissioned, performed or sold outwith London was worthless and that if we didn't move to London within the year we would be out of work and die of cancer.

Why SLR?
Miss having one mainly!

for lens interchangeability I suppose?
-
• #6461
aye, wont be for a few months yet anyway, but i imagine the 40mm lens and 100d probably taking over my X20, its bigger but the X20 isnt small enough to fit in a pocket anyway

Martin Parr is a jerk...
Funny you say that. First time I met him in college, he was releasing one of his books and was a proper champ. Throwing advice, smiles and confetti at everyone. The lecture he gave at Uni might as well have been done by a prison warden. He was a class A arrogant dick. When questioned about some of his technical choices, he basically said we were all idiots that couldn't possibly comprehend his god like technique.
In so many words.
The one Photographer whom I worshiped that actually ended up being, contrary to popular belief a true gentleman was Bruce Gilden. Spent a while with him up and down Oxford Street just snapping away. Made my month that.

I am missing that myself too but SLR means sub-standard sensor; mahosive size etc. with the only gain being interchangeability which is even a decent mirrorless would offer.
Compared at my budget and with X100

decent points
-
• #6465
Although I havent seen a decent EVF on a mirrorless yet; apart from Sony A7 which is fucking expensive and defies the purpose.
-
• #6466
What about an X-E1? Can be had for under £300 on ebay. The EVF is perfectly useable on that. Sensor is better than anything Canon does and you get to change lenses.

He did the same for us when I was doing my degree, my point is that he can be nice when he chooses to, like he is a mate with some of the tutors that's why he donated a print. If us the students were to ask him... well...

What's wrong with that? Surly eating yogurt is more important than dealing with your uncle! (No offense...) lol

It was a student that asked in our case, both for him to come to Glasgow and give a talk and to donate a print.

Has a little play on the X-T1 yesterday. I'm really tempted. Bit weird having a digital viewfinder, but that's the way it's all going...
-
• #6471
Isn't the viewfinder even bigger than full frame? That's quite a big deal... Plus all those handy overlays.

You don't think you'll ever love it as much as you do an optical one, and then you do. It opens up a magical world of manual focus lens possibilities having 10x live view zoom at your eye. And seeing your exposure for actual real, not just on the meter, before you press the shutter.
I do still miss my D700 on occasion, but the X-E2 is a joy to use. I definitely take it out with me far more than I did the Nikon; it is so unobtrusive.

How come SLR sensors sub-standard? I didn't know this.

this was the important bit

Regarding the Martin Parr thing, here's the recommendation, if you can be arsed to read it.
Go on...
