can you imagine what an amateur photography version of tester would be like? shudder
But Tester does actually know what he is talking about and will readily admit his error if he is proven wrong. The majority of camera geeks have gained their "knowledge" through reading amateur photo mags and sites like Ken Rockwell's and then memorising the tech specs or more specifically, pixel counts, of every model in the Canon/Nikon line up.

camera's bring out the worst in people.
Tell me about it, I don't have a photogenic side.

Some was tell me the other day that his son was getting into photography, he asked where i thought he could go to share in his hobby. He asked if i thought local camera club would be a good place to go. I pointed out that they don't do photography in camera clubs. The clue is in the title. Just nerds fiddling with settings.
And if they do ever do any photography they will just be nerds fiddling with knobs (pun intended) while they gawp at a "model" or some flowers in a garden centre.

Flame me if this has been asked before (too tired to trawl all pages) but I usually shoot film and only have a really big heavy DSLR. Looking for a compact digital camera around the £100 mark that is still good quality for documenting events and can throw in my jersey pocket. I'll probs have to buy second hand but I'm genuinely clueless as to where to begin!

I've got a PowerShot SD780, its the size of a credit card and takes great photos i'm sure they'd be pretty cheap second hand these days.

its also known as the ixus 100 i believe.

I used to have an "IXUS 110 IS" which I think is a little bit chubbier but has a 28mm wide lens. Took really great pics until it fell off the bike at speed. Much better image quality than the water/drop/dust/bombproof camera I got to replace it. Hrm amazon says £160 but I'm sure they've had it a lot cheaper than that in the past (I checked when I was doing the travel insurance thing) so worth checking around. All these were shot with it.

Canon G9 (or 10 or whatever you can afford).
This is my portable camera of (budgetary) choice. -

Aren't the Canon G series a little to big to fit in a jersey pocket?
-

Camera shops are much worse though. Full of people who have failed at photography except for having their tedious sunset photos in AP 6 years ago.
True dat.
Apart from Aperture, who have the most lovely staff of anywhere. They're really friendly and it's a great place to get used kit.

I always thought that silver print was a great place, although that's not really a camera shop.

To be honest it's usually in my bag but I reckon they would fit. I can conduct an experiment tomorrow.

Still looking for a forum with a good classified section. PONT and Amateur photography is American and Talkphotography sounds hideous. Are there no good uk ones?

i got a g9 as an upgrade from a ricoh grd but it was too big to carry everywhere. the grd wasn't as good as the g9, but small enough for back jeans pocket so kept using that instead

that said, the g9 was miles better than the ricoh, but a camera at home doesn't do much good does it

Has anyone else ever bought from here, http://www.digitalrev.com
The prices seem too good to be true, either that or I should shop around more often. I did some checking and all the import duty is included in the prices and the shipping costs are reasonable. I was just paranoid that it would be a con.
But then they've got a big youtube channel with a dodgy presenter and loads of reviews of stuff so that seemed like a little too much effort to con people.

They seem to have a good reputation for delivering what they say they will and quite quickly, but import duty isn't necessarily everything - does it cover VAT, customs admin charges etc? Are they guaranteeing no extra fees? Is it definitely still cheaper with everything included?

I'll do a bit more digging, their online support chat thingy was really helpful before
It's looking pretty good, but I have sent a message to their customer services as the live help isn't currently open to clarify ALL possible charges
