really enjoying the x100. It's taking a while to get to grips with the amount of options, but it's great fun learning it all.
I still don't think I can get my head around the ISO setting! I understand it's the film speed, but there's no film, so why is it there?

to set the sensitivity of the sensor
higher ISO = more sensitive to light = more noise / grain
lower ISO = less sensitive = less noise / grain, if any
it's another variable for you to use to get the result you want. If you want to learn other bits first, keep it on 100 if it's sunny out, 400 if cloudy / dusk, higher when needed / indoors

a good way to learn and understand how the settings work is to fix two and play around with the third, ie fixed shutter speed + aperture, play around with ISO
fixed iso / aperture, play around with shutter speed and so on
Low aperture = short depth of field which is nice if used correctly, like in your photos above

You might fancy reading Understanding Exposure, it explains the relationship between ISO shutter speed and aperture very well.

Thanks man, I'll give it a read... The x100 goes up to 12800 iso, but apparently works really well with little grain at 3000 odd. I think that's why it works so well in low lighting conditions.

^ so you can replicate each and any different ISO film that suit your light conditions etc. - just like most digis i think?
EDIT: oops, watched too many episodes of buffy and forgot to refresh...
p.s. love the chicken pictures, look great!

Can anyone recommend a good photography forum with a classifieds section also?
Got banned from photography forum.org for accidentally duplicating a post. Harsh. -

Enjoying the Leica D-lux 5. So nice to have a decent camera that fits in my pocket. Not had a chance to take many proper photos yet, but here are a few from the last week or so.

Your last week was better than mine.

Talkphotography has a semi decent classifieds section, buyers can be quite picky though, want to see a hundred images of anything then a hundred more test images with it for anything you're selling, also you have to be a member for a month n make 100 posts before you buy or sell and the rules there are pretty anal too, I've been barred once already, for posting in a sales thread when I wasn't buying the thing or something.

Amateur photographer forums always used to be quite good as well. From what I remember.

Yeah I emailed the bloke and apologised profusely for my rudeness but he didn't even reply. knob.
POTN is pretty good so far. Same interface as here so I feel at home already.

The only places worse than bike shops are camera shops so not surprised if photography forums are full of frustrated, angry dickheads.
-
• #594
What are you implying about bike shops?!
-
• #595
You work in media don't you?
preemptive quote

Er, that people who don't know every last thing about bikes sometimes get treated like idiots? And that people who do know every last thing about bikes also sometimes get treated like idiots.
Camera shops are much worse though. Full of people who have failed at photography except for having their tedious sunset photos in AP 6 years ago. -

There's a pretty great article on T.O.P blog today about the survivability of images. The last paragraph sums it up for me. http://bit.ly/kcvGOX -
