Would any working photographers here be up for having an assistant on shoots? I'd like the experience and would be happy holding reflectors and operating strobes etc.

Went skiing, ditch my camera and relied entirely on a mobile phone with an image editing application
Did you realise that there was a camera in your phone?!??!1!

Imaging my surprised that it also capable of making telephone call.
Bloody hell, those are good. Regardless of format.
Thank, the bold part is exactly my thinking, I used to use a medium/large format camera because of the perspective being closer to the human eyes (5x8 with a 90mm lens is a real treat), hence the Fujifilm X100 for it's larger sensor, and the Sony RX100.
But I realised in the long term that a simple editing can go a long way, the only disadvantage is that I can't find an image editing application that allow me to skewed the image to removed the distortion like I would in Photoshop, and yes, I use VSCO cam, save me quite a bit of work if a bit limiting (their shadow and highlight is pretty weak).

Dude, if we could lug around large format view cameras everywhere, we would. But we'd also miss all those moments worth photographing. I think you have the right idea of having something decent with you AT ALL TIMES with the possibility of returning with a bigger boat later on.

Great imagery there Ed. Aside from technically awesome pictures, the set really puts out a story. I now really want to go snowboarding.

I really like this

In the same spirit as the above I've been playing with a Fujifilm XF1 I picked up in the sale. Quite nice for a cheap compact, particularly in low light.

Scobles cabin one is really nice, just the sort of thing I like.

Bingo, I also think the fact we can actually edit them without needing a computer helped massively.

Been thinking of getting rid of my X100 in exchange of a smaller and actually pocket sized compact. Now you have made me wanting to turn my thinking into action...

Had an idea about making fake depth of field using photoshop. Its a bit like the tilt/shift effect but without a focal plane - its selective.
Used layer mask and brush tool, feathered the left hand side a bit and applied gaussian blur. Pretty weird look.

Better to use a feathered selection using lasso, then lens blur. Much more natural effect if used sparingly. Nice shot though. Here's a very quick example. Select a vague oblong shape then feather according to output size (this was feathered by 100px), then select inverse > filter > lens blur and have a play about. Will never replicate a proper tilt-shift lens, but cheaper..

Guess he was going for the "weird" look..

I can kinda see the point about DoF, and does work used v. sparingly on portraits.

A few more from the above shoot.

Yeah, its a weird look that I'll never use, I was just wasting time at work. Only reason for not using the selection tool is that only one side is feathered (the long side of the cabin) and using a mask just seemed simplest. I'd like to try it with a photo with a few people at varying distances and have them in focus. That would just look strange.
