  • Thing about the d3 is, its big and heavy, what I like about the 'semi-pro' nikons is that you can pop the grip off and shed well over 1/3rd of its weight for holidays etc

  • Haha, I did take a look at those recently - having only seen them on websites so far - because I sort-of "like" Pentax.
When I saw them in the flesh for the first time I was very amused (disappointed as well, but primarily amused) -
those bodies are so small - it's like a "pro" all-weather camera for kids!
    : ]

    They make decent travel camera.

  • I have a Pentax, I'm not a pro or even a semi pro so I don't have any need for a pro or semi pro camera, just something that's not annoying to carry and won't break easy. Plus I like their lenses (this is the main thing).

  • Don't get me wrong, I like them! They're just really small.
I just like big DSLR bodies I can wrap my fingers around, pinkie included.

    A D3 is basically just a high fps D700

I don't know, some little differences really matter to me.
For instance, since I saw how AF sensors can be backlit in a nice, unobtrusive way like in the D3 I want to throw cameras on the floor when black rectangles appear in my finder.

  • Do you have lenses for both Nikon and Canon??
By the way, how about somthing like this for fast & tough sub £1000 -

Bloody hell, is that how much D3's are going for these days! That's my point you see, certain prices for what the camera can do don't make sense, or am I making too much of a fuss about specifics?

Nah, don't have lenses for Canon. I only use one lens for any period of time (35mm 1.8), so body price is of more importance for me.

I like their real world prices you see, and I've been using Pentax since K1000 (favourite film is the Program-A), so I WANT to like them, but....I want this to last. The d200 has been indestructible. I even dropped it out of a moving car and down a snow slope. I seek that same AK-47 style ruggedness.

I WANT A NEW FAST CAMERA> IM DRUNK AND I WANT IT NOW!

  • Canon 7D? A bit old now but literally indestructible.

  • Canon 7D? A bit old now but literally indestructible.

Too small a foot print in terms of ergonomics. It's horrible to hold. Felt worse than a 5d. like Tina said, the pinky matters. The high ISO, which I rely on quite a lot cos I shoot a lot at night, is not particularly impressive considering its age, hence asking about other companies.

Basically what I want is a high iso, mid-body, fast AF iq, (maybe FX), ergonomically resilient body.

  • It's amazing how photographer managed with the old Nikon F.

  • …..

  • Don't be so pedantic ed. Different people have different needs and time moves on in terms of technology. What had to be considered as a necessity is now optional. Technological development when it comes to cameras used to be left to those with money to spend, yes, it did. Now it is accessible to everyone. If people can invest long term on a camera that will make their hobby/job easier, then why not. If we all go by your rule, we'd all be using a compact camera.
Sure, I still use and am nostalgic about after the film era, but that doesn't mean i have to live there, I shoot digital because it facilitates a process that was once a pain in the ass (but a good one) so, so what If I ask for a bit more.
I still shoot film on a Pentax ProgramA. Does that mean I have to do that 24/7?

    The answer is no.

  • Really like this one

  • Chak, have a look at used 1D mkiiis...

    Also, fanks Kboy.

  • nice shot will the clouds look like a painting! is that with the D7000?

  • Thanks, it is with the D7000. It's on the Wirral and just one of those days when the light and the clouds come together and you end up with lots of subtly different shots of the same scene.

  • Is that West Kirby marine lake? They always seem to get epic sunsets up that way.

  • It is. In between storms the water was unusually placid.

  • ..of the new blue ones I find "Yarmouth Belle" the most interesting.

  • ...and nice one, Will!
Bit much contrast for my taste (and I'd straighten it out) but really nice image.

  • Comments welcome, I might edit the saturation on others.

  • Been a bit stormy down here....

  • Buying used lenses from ebay etc. - too risky? what do we think? I'm after a canon 70-200 f4 L and they seem to be pretty good value new anyway but i have limited experience in buying lenses second hand. Cheers

  • Did buy some used ("solid", manual focus) lenses; one or two were bad, most were good / great deals.

Would not buy used L optics over eBay (except maybe from a shop, but still rather not).

join a few forums. Prices tend to be better and I've had fewer problems.
