  • I was looking at one of those Sling straps for my X100, but after watching the way Zack Arias's camera was bouncing around the place during his DigitalRev Pro with a crap camera video, I decided against it. I mean, I'm not precious about my gear, but that just looked like abuse, willing something to go wrong.

    that's pretty much how I do all my photos though, black and white, contrasty and a bit of vignette-ing

  • It works but I prefer it in colour. Someone run it through VSCO!

  • I prefer the colour too, it got those cool tint of a Fujifilm.

  • I know this has been asked before but I'm struggling.

    I need to use some card recovery software to find some videos my 4yo deleted. All the software I've tried so far leads you on a merry trail before dropping a $40 bill before you can get anything useful.

    Does anyone have something I can use, or know of software that is either cheap or free?

    Oh and it's for a mac. Finding lots for PC but the mac ones are shit.

    Had I not been away all weekend, Photorec, by those folks, is what I would have recommended. Was quite easy to talk my Mechanic brother through running it on O'Shane's Ubuntu Desktop with minimal previous Linux or CommandLine experience.

  • You do have to press a button in order to slide the camera out of the mount, so not much of a surprise...

  • Cheers - been playing with an old super takumar 135mm. It's really hard to nail the focus though the viewfinder but when it's right, it's plenty sharp. There's a bit of red chromatic aberration which is a first and it flares to the point of the photo being totally washed-out in pink if the sun is even vaguely in the periphery but it renders stuff nicely and was free : )

  • I am covering a conference for work on Wed, free job as I need to expend my event portfolio and if I didn't do it then I would have to sit there all day like a rotten lemon. Anyway, question is, would you be tempted just to give them high res jpegs? The thought of having to convert any number of raw is dreading me already... some of you might know I have a D600 so I am thinking maybe I could get away with high res jpeg? Will be shooting both anyway, but just thinking what files to edit with... They just want a document of the event and maybe some pics here and there for the website and the occasional poster...

  • Shoot on Raw. Conference locations are a fucking nightmare for white balance half the time. You'll be thankfull for the option to change it when you come to editing so the photos all look consistent. But I imagine they'll only want jpgs delivered.

    Regarding straps, fuck that sling shit. And you definately wouldn't want the. With two bodies. Normal straps are fine. They keep the camera(s) in place. And you're right ed, rarely see any pros on the curcuit rocking that gimmicky shit.

    Oh I got that Think Tank Airport Essentials rucksack. It's great. Looks the business, and comfortable fully loaded when cycling.

    No, give them medium to low res jpegs

    This is when you charge them for print res/prepped files.

  • Oh and don't do it for free. Make sure you get something out of it, even if it's a bottle of whiskey or a free nights booze and dinner. Don't encourage the mentality of getting creatives to work for nothing, it's detrimental to the industry. You should get some form of reward, no matter how small.

  • sorry when I say high res, I meant high enough quality for them... a long day... I usually shoot raw for myself and get rid of them when I am sure I don't need them... I am hoping if I do a good job, they will pay me next time. They just commissioned a professional to do their proper publicity and when she came round to our site, I had the pleasure to watch her work and I thought to myself, I could have done it in half the time and charged half the price. I am seeing this as a free tester for them, really.

    and for the record, I work for and graduated from the self claimed one of the biggest art universities... but I am used to them not appreciate their own production. Last year they paid a graphic designer £50k to redesign our logo when they could have done it in-house.

    I think my payment would be a cup of instant coffee...

    I am just not cut out for the commercial world of photography...

    I guess if you want to use these images in your portfolio and feel that having raws will benefit you then that's up to you. I always went on the basis that if a jpeg was good enough for the original client then it'd be good enough for my (online) portfolio.

    This will never happen. If you work once for free they'll see you as a free ride. They'd be more likely to pay someone else.

    Then sorry to be blunt but what the hell are you doing playing about sith with it doing stuff for free and devaluing everybody who is cut out for it.

    Edit: Sorry ExTra, this comes across a bit cuntish and I didn't mean that.

    I'd be very surprised if when you give them a price for the next job the reply is anything other than "But you did it for free the last time."

    If you could do a better, quicker and realistically cheaper than the pro they hired then you should have told them so.

    If they would have hired a pro for this then by doing it for free you have a) done someone out of a job that might have helped them pay the rent and b) set a precedent of them getting photos for free which makes them less likely to pay anyone for them in the future.

  • ExTra, sounds like you could really benefit from using light room, it makes shooting in jpeg completely redundant in most cases.

    Also, I have to agree with everyone saying that working for free sets a dangerous precedent for yourself and is generally bad for the industry. If its something like a mates wedding then fair play but big, corporate budgets exist for a reason...

  • I'm actually considering selling my Sigma DP2, Fujifilm X100 and some bits to get an X-E1.

    Mainly because I want to use the 27mm F2.8 and the 18mm F/2 lens (41mm & 28mm FoV) instead of carrying two different camera.
