  • This looks nice...

  • 'California dreaming' — Ricoh GRD III

I decided to take the bus into work as I woke up to the sound of rain on glass. I do enjoy taking the bus every now and then, for the opportunity to read and for the time on foot, to and from.

This advert looked so ridiculous on a wet September morning in Camden that I had to take a picture. I waited a minute or two for a disgruntled Londoner to walk into the frame; a brolly would have been nice.

  • Does anyone have any recommendations for a camera repair place in Central or East London? My Canon 500D packed up on a recent holiday and I need to get it fixed before going away again...

  • Not sure where they are in that london but Fixation and Apertureuk fix Canons

  • Graham Playford just south of Tower Bridge is good.

Aperture doesn't actually fix any camera, they send off cameras somewhere else for repair and I think they have regular send off dates. Richard will most likely send you round the corner to another camera shop which I never remember the name of.

Fixation is good and it's in Kennington - here

  • I have a 16-85mm Nikon lens on my camera. This morning the camera was in my bag and for some reason I decided to throw myself over the bars, landing on my bag. Don't know what happened to the camera but i guess some sort of impact on the front on the lens.

The lens looks and optically works the same, but the zoom has now become really stiff, especially at the 85mm end. I feel like continued use is gonna put stress on the mount and break it further or damage the body.

Anyone had experience of this or know if it could be fixed?

  • Sounds like you've bent the lens?

  • would have expected that would affect the optics though?

  • Take a picture of a grid of squares, evenly lit, straight on and at various focal lengths. Have a look at said images and I'm sure you'll see something there, probably just some slight blur or aberration on one side of the image.
Or maybe you lucked-out and its fine!

  • Also, hope you aren't injured.

  • Thanks for that, I may do some tests, or I may just continue using it as it seems fine.

  • Hello,

My wife has asked for a DSLR for her birthday. I've looked at loads but, knowing her, questioned her commitment to carrying a bulky camera and lenses about, never mind having the patience to learn to use it to its full potential... she agreed with my assessment. So I've been looking at compact system cameras like the NEX 5N which seem like the perfect compromise of quality, versatility and portability. I've read dozens of reviews and articles and most of this thread... The thing is, I can't help feeling that she might be happier with the apparently very awesome and undeniably lovely Fuji x100... although I think that might just be my own desire taking over.

Can anyone settle my dilemma by telling me which is the best CSC to go for? Must have a a viewfinder, budget up to £700... of course also feel free to just tell me to get her the X100.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Can you do something about that apostrophe please?

  • which one?

  • You know very well which one.

  • can I have some advice now please?

  • Only you know what she will use it for and if she is likely to get bored with too much tech. And whether 'image quality' is a major concern - in the real world, that is, not here in the OCD camera club.

  • Ok, fair point, so just best CSC in that budget then?

  • Like the rest of us she is more likely to use her camera if it feels right in her hands so a hands on test would be a good idea. If you have married a woman with big hands then some cameras might not feel good for her. If she has dainty little hands, like yourself, then that will have an effect.

  • Alternatively you could just as PhotoBen and EdScoble to pick a camera each and have them fight to the death. The money you make selling tickets will pay for her present with enough left over for a romantic dinner too.

  • Ok cheers I'll just take her to a shop then. Was trying to keep it more of a surprise but I think you're right, she's going to have to choose something herself.

  • You can save the surprises for when she is trying out her new camera's low light performance in the bedroom later.

  • A few more from my travels.

  • Nice set, well travelled.
