  • with under 10k actuations...

Frankly, I'd probably ignored the actuations limit.

I had something like 200,000 actuations on my Canon 5D, can't see it needing any TLC.

  • ^ Had about 40,000 on my first 5D mrk II before the shutter suddenly failed (owned from new).

  • Anyone know of any decent/cheap photoediting software on ipad.

  • Saw an advert the other day for a suite of Adobe ipad/android apps. Think they were cheap-ish.

  • Photogene is basically lightroom for the the ipad. I'm happy with it.

  • Does anyone have experience with the sigma 70-200 f2.8 OS lens? http://m.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma_70-200_2p8_os_c16 . I'm on the verge of buying one to be used with a d7000. I'll also be buying either the Nikon or sigma 1.4x teleconverter. My only worry is the weather sealing. Most of its use will be wildlife in dark and humid/wet tropical rainforest (borneo & Cmbodia) . Does anyone have any thoughts/ experience? I can't afford the modern Nikon equivalent and although I could borrow a Nion 80-200 2.8, its about 10years old, a little fungussy and the focus is slow and noisy.t

  • I have been taking inspiration from Ande's high-contrast B&W. Here are a couple from Melbourne's chinatown.

  • I have one. Have been very happy with it overall. I've used it in drizzle and it's been fine but only for relatively short periods.

If you can make it to Putney you're welcome to come try it out if you like.

Wow, I'm flattered to be quoted as an inspiration! Chinatown is lovely, I like how I have to peer into the image just that little bit more to make out the details.

  • Was saving up for a D7000 only to discover these rumours of a D600. If it really is as cheap (relatively speaking) as they say then it's a no brainier.
Of course, canon could release an affordable full frame but it just doesn't seem likely to happen in the near future.

Just want Nikon to hurry up and release it already.

  • Does look good. Anyone want to buy a second hand D7000?

  • How long is it before they normally start shipping after showing off a camera at one of the shows?

    Months/weeks?

In a bit of a quandary too, I don't want to buy a D700 and then have those shipping within a couple months BUT I need one as soon as.

  • The D4 was announced in January and began rolling out in Feb but didn't get in to most peoples hands until March. That said, the D600 will sell like fucking hot cakes so expect them to be hard to find.
Apparently the factories in Thailand will be producing them (as apposed to Japan where the D800 & D4 are made) which is a hint that they intend to make loads of the buggers.

Probably not going to be as metallic as the D7000 in order to keep the cost down and might not have as much sealing etc.

Gonna give you 105-300mm on DX, which might be fine if you want it for wildlife etc, but is on the long side for a 'normal' tele. I have the 50-150 2.8 (v1, 5-6 years old, non-OS). It's one of my favourite lenses: razor sharp wide open, smooth bokeh, lightweight for its range and speed, fast, accurate HSM focus. It's not weather-sealed (no rubber gasket around the mount, anyway) so I couldn't say how it would hold up in a downpour or tropics, but it's been out in the rain a number of times with no problem. They now to an OS version which is considerably bigger, heavier and more expensive, but you might be able to find a used one cheapish on eBay. Highly recommend if weight is a consideration.

  • My canon 35mm f2 lens is getting very sticky on autofocus.

I'm thinking about attempting a disassemble as instructed here,

    http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1029&message=39667619&changemode=1

It is a little scary to attempt taking apart a lens, and wandered if anyone had any pointers/experience of such an operation.

  • thanks for the responses. I'm based in Oxford so unfortunately no opportunity to come to try your lens but I did get a play on one (mounted to a cannon body) in Dubai airport and was very impressed.

105-300 is exactly what I'm looking for, and frankly wont always be enough either hence the 1.4x teleconverter as well (which should bump me up to just over 400mm). Unfortunately I'm not expecting to get close to many of my subjects (hopefully muller's & albibarbis gibbons, red (and HUGELY UNLIKELY) white fronted langur, Orang-utans and anything else I can find) so the more length and the more light the better. The OS is therefore one of the main benefits of buying a new sigma over the old Nikon I could borrow as although I don't believe the claimed 4 stops, every little helps. ANyway, I'm glad you are happy with the overall lens quality as I'm 99% sure I'm going to get my local camera store to order one in tomorrow.

I think the main danger with the lens is going to be the constant humidity since I'm unlikely to see anything, let alone photograph it when the rain gets going properly, but I already store everything alongside a ton of silica so hopefully everything will stay dry!

My new D7000 is in the post :) :)

  • I've more or less got my heart set on the sigma 70-200 f2.8 but feeling slightly queasy about the money and I'm thinking maybe its better to.get the old Nikon equivalent serviced and save my money. Does anyone know how long it takes and how much it costs to.get a lens serviced? I need quite a quick turn around.

  • What are the benefits of a 5D over a 60D? I know what the spiel says but in real terms, what benefits would I see? I'm not a professional, I take photos mostly for fun, but this year I joined my friend's race team as their photographer. I've been faring really well with a 60D I borrowed off my dad, a lot better than my 400D, so I was going to upgrade but I don't know if it's worth going up one more to a 5D. I don't know how it will be better. I don't mean it in a sarcastic way, I genuinely want some opinions.

  • mk1 or 2?

  • Either?

  • 5D is still an awesome camera to this day. I absolute love mine and have travelled all over with it and It's never missed a beat.

I think the quality from full frame is remarkable over a 400d but the 60d is a fairly new camera, you'd probably still notice some difference with the 5d though.
