• Dunno.

I don't understand why you'd want to cycle without at least one calliper brake, even if on fixed.

Sorry have i missed something, can't see a reference to brakes in either of the articles, just recklessness.

  • No detail = No commment, non?

  • Sorry wonder why the cyclists was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter

Well usually by killing someone would get him arrested.

Frankly, it's manslaughter alright when you're riding a bicycle with umpteen senario to prevent an untimely death of a mother.

  • No detail = No commment, non?

    1+

the news is going to go crazy on that.

  • Lack of facts = Load of bollocks...
Other than knowing that a woman died due to injuries sustained after a cyclist collided with her while crossing a road, what else do we have? Sweet zip... Maybe the cyclist did jump a red light? Maybe he had no brakes? Maybe the poor woman wasn't looking where she was going? Who knows?
Until we do know what actually happened it's pointless to start slinging blame around/create scenarios...

  • @ Lynx, The OP and the BBC report state involuntary manslaughter.

As I take it from Wiki, this is less culpable than voluntary manslaughter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manslaughter#Involuntary_manslaughter

  • Maybe he was riding a dual suspension mountain bike.

  • Notice how if a cyclist knocks someone down and kills them it's manslaughter?
And if a motorist does it, even deliberately, it's a traffic offence. Or maybe nothing at all.

The difference is that a cyclist have umpteen senario to avoid such collison whether a 4+ wheels motorised vehicle doesn't.

  • Dunno.

I don't understand why you'd want to cycle without at least one square wheel, even if on fixed.
    .

that, young Ed, is a crock of shit…

until you know the facts of the 'scenario' you have absolutely no idea whether the incident could have been avoided

  • fuck me Ed - do you even ride a bike?

the two offs I've had involved peddos running, yup running, directly into my path from the pavement

pray tell in your experience what my umpteen scenarios are in this instance

  • Notice how if a cyclist knocks someone down and kills them it's manslaughter?
And if a motorist does it, even deliberately, it's a traffic offence. Or maybe nothing at all.

There are a range of offences specific to people in motor vehicles, such as causing death by dangerous driving, which tend to get invoked in parallel cases. That's part of the reason you won't hear about manslaughter as much with drivers.

  • that, young Ed, is a crock of shit…

until you know the facts of the 'scenario' you have absolutely no idea whether the incident could have been avoided

quite right, best to leave it till we hear more about the collsion.

  • Silly cucumber boy.

  • It does say 'at the junction'.... a bit more detail..... http://www.camdengazette.co.uk/content/camden/chronicle/news/story.aspx?brand=CAMCOnline&category=news&tBrand=northlondon24&tCategory=newscamc&itemid=WeED10%20Mar%202010%2013:10:35:103

The details from that (because URLs to local news sites tend to break after a while):

A HOLIDAYMAKER died after a collision with a cyclist while crossing a busy junction.

Marian Anderson, 56, from Denmark, was struck by a bicycle by a traffic light crossing at the junction of Lidlington Place and Eversholt Street, in Mornington Crescent.

Ms Anderson was on her way to visit Camden Town's markets with her daughter, who is in her mid-20s.

She was rushed by ambulance to University College Hospital in Euston and later transferred to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in Bloomsbury where she died last Monday.

Abdul Baser, a shop worker in Eversholt Street, said: "I remember the police and ambulance arriving and a woman was being cradled in the road. She was hurt but did not seem that bad and was awake. I just figured she would be treated at hospital and would eventually be oka,y so it is a real shock that she died."

The cyclist, who was thrown from his bike but not injured at 10am on February 21, is thought to have ridden across Eversholt Street from Oakley Square and collided with Ms Anderson as she crossed Lidlington Place.

Police are urgently seeking witnesses to help with their investigation.

Sergeant Steve Mulcahy, of the Alperton Collision Investigation Unit, said: "It is a very rare and strange thing that has happened. It is a real tragedy. It is quite a busy junction and we want to see if any witnesses saw the incident.

"We don't know the situation and we don't know whether the cyclist went through a red light or whether the mother and daughter crossed when they should not have.

"She was conscious after being hit but was obviously in a lot of pain. Her injuries were not immediately deemed life threatening but sadly she died just over a week later."

Ms Anderson had only been in the country for one day. A post-mortem at St Pancras mortuary last Thursday gave the cause of death as head injuries and her daughter, who was not injured in the collision, travelled home to Denmark on Fridayto be with her family.

Stefano Casalotti, of the Camden Cycling Campaign, said: "It is obviously very tragic when a pedestrian is hit by anything and dies but this is a very rare occurrence. Unfortunately though it can happen and there are probably lessons to be learned.

"There is a certain amount of responsibility on cyclists to keep their speed at a level where they are able to stop in any circumstances but we really don't know what has happened in this situation.

"Also pedestrians tend to rely a lot on listening when they cross the road. Unfortunately this means that they often won't hear a bicycle coming and will think they are free to cross."

Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist is asked to call Sergeant Mulcahy on 020 8998 5319.

  • Police are urgently seeking witnesses to help with their investigation.

So even the po-po don't know what happened...

  • I think they always appeal for witnesses after such events whether or not the believe they know what happened.

  • He should be shot to maim then burn him at the stake until he is medium rare but still alive then drown him in acid for riding a square wheeled unipak fixie skidder with fake arrospoks and skinny jeans on his ipod whilst jumping lights swearing at peds and smoking roll ups!

It's the press all over really, adding speculation into the mix my mentioning light jumping and speeding. the rest goes to those who look at the words and don't take it in to be re-told later.

Tis very sad but how many times people walk out without looking?! i saw a woman do it near bond st, she ignored me but also ignored the van coming around me, i slowed up he didn't she flew up into the air, she even had to stop her phone conversation.
Funny she didn't have a go at the Van, but if i had hit her she would have had a go at me. they don't like cyclist veering from the rules of the highway, curse us for jumping lights or cycling on the pavements. but then ignore us when we are on the roads. or expect us to cycling into oncoming traffic to get around them when they decided to cross.... double standards... they are as bad as cyclists

  • Squarrospoks.

  • I think they always appeal for witnesses after such events whether or not the believe they know what happened.

    the more witness the better.

like the Renault that got caught on the bumper of an HGV, police reopen the investigation due to more evidence.

  • dont forget she was from denmark. she probably looked the wrong way when crossing the street, I know I have a few times.

if he indeed was reckless or jumped a red, it was bad luck that the lady died but it is in fact his responsability...if she crossed without looking or when it was red, its not his fault but he will have to deal with this for a long time anyway

    shit situation.

  • what depresses me the most, that you open any news source and you see "kill kill kill murder murder murder"

  • the truth is: if he was brakeless, there's a shitstorm coming your way.

  • Dunno.

I don't understand why you'd want to cycle without at least one calliper brake, even if on fixed.

Im always looking out for pedestirains on the road and my front break has saved me on more than one occassion. I would like the bike courier who called me a faker as i stepped out my front door the other day to read this article.

  • There's some ill informed shit on this thread. Wait until the facts are known, if ever, before leaping to conclusions.

In the meantime, my thoughts are with the family of this poor woman.
