Load of bollocks, I nearly got knocked off twice the other day because of idiot drivers zooming past me and slamming on their brakes as I was coming up to a T-junction to turn right.
They didn't get anywhere and could've killed me. I went fucking ape shit at one of them. Cunts.
They need to understand that we need to use the whole road sometimes.

there is a serious side to it,
earlier I mentioned that non-riding friends I have know about all this, they are looking forward to it, the possibility that it gets widespread condemnation (the whole scheme after installing) could really set back creating more riders.
also, the regions look at what is happening in London as the forefront of cycling/ road scheme innovation-(dont all laugh at once)
if they see it going tits up, already reluctant engineers, traffic planners will just continue to go "yeah whatever dudes" keep the cars moving, forget the riders....
I hate seeing loads of kids , and worse, adults in this area all on the f.....g pavement, "because its safer"
Hardcore can fight our own battles on roads, others need lots of help. -

Is anyone here familiar with what they have done in Bogota?
There was a documentary on the communtiy channel about it. They had an elightned mayor with all these great transport ideas. One of the the major issues was creating infrastructure for the poor towns and villages on the outskirts of the city. Where people had NO roads or transport at all. Instead of giving them motor roads and encouraging vehicle usage. He built them big cycle lanes which went all the way into the city. Now everyone has got themselves a bike and rides into the city for school or work.
The same place has a "bike day" every sunday where they close the major highways in the city and turn them into bike only roads.
I think it would be so incredibly awesome if for only ONE day per year, they closed a few major motorways and pretty A roads and left them for bikes only.
The whole nation would get into cycling and ride all over the place on "bike day".
I would totally do that if I was the PM.

er, have you heard of the London Freewheel, DFP.?
-
• #89
Bogotà is one of the big success stories and of all the cycling cities in the world is probably the place most comparable to London.
Freewheel will hopefully grow but isn't anywhere near the big Berlin Sternfahrt ('star ride') yet. That has 250,000 participants when the weather is good. In 2005, it was absolutely bucketing it down and they still got 100,000.

Sorry *m.f - I was thinking other Towns and Cities in the UK probably have some 'cycling/ road scheme innovation' of their own and don't need to look at London for ideas. Some may even consider themselves as forefronters.
I'm at London.

I am getting upset about this highway nonsense. They've painted two narrow lines outside Tooting Bec station I really can't see why. And yesterday I saw the same at a junction on my way between Stockwell and Clapham North. I was cycling on nice tarmac and crunch crunch crunch when I got to that blue surface. I am thinking of lying on the road when they do the work to stop this nonsense.
I might give up cycling in July when they launch them.

Looks like an unbelievable waste of money all round.
I am trying to avoid them completely.

Cycle Superhighway Route 7 05/03/10[/ame]i see no difference at all other than that's 22 million quid less to spend on bikes
-
• #97
Absolute fucking rubbish.
.
-
• #98
these are pilots yeah? so if they fail, let's make a great big fuss and see if we can stop another 100 million quid or more being pissed up (or painted on) our roads. how much would it cost to have secure bike parking in london? at least that would be a tangible gain.
bike lanes and more complex road infrastructure will fail. they point to cable street as an exemplar but the narrow lanes make it one of the most dangerous places I've ever ridden. simpler roads and less HGVs are what it takes to make the whole environment safer. ever-more complex structures, signage, rules does f*ck all.
-
• #99
That's the worse thing, they're the real deal, not a pilots.
it's just a normal bike lane that has been painted and designed even more poorly than the predecessor.

Surely it will only be 6 months (if that) untill motorists are driving in them like they never exsisted.
I'm not, no.
