  • and in both your pics there are cars on the blue areas!

  • Is that an ASL box (being encroached) in the second photo?

  • Absolute fucking rubbish.

  • They've basically turned the routine maintenance of cycle lanes into an empty political statement.

  • 1st photo shows traffic moving across the junction, so they are not parked there - my phone camera just caught them at that point.
but yes, second one has a car sitting halfway in it.
The second spot is dodgy anyway, as there is a bus stop just behind it on the left and buses stopping there frequently then turn left at that junction, trapping any cyclists. Its the one part of the road I never ride down (always filter down the outside as you can see from my position)

not impressed. The surface is also worse than that offensive green stuff they put in the regular ones. Fixie skidders will shred their tyres in no time ;-)

  • whats the plan for the fast stretch of road after Oval (going north) with the shit cycle lane in the middle of the carriage way? Also the other side (going South) which is worse, as the safest way to traverse it is to basically RLJ before the 2 lanes of traffic move off, so you can move into the right hand lane (not the one that peels off toward Brixton road) Most cyclists tend to take the bus lane on the left, then scarily try to cross at the last minute - this is frankly frightening. More experienced cyclists will take primary road position and spin for their lives, however I often still get bullied from drivers thinking I shouldnt be there...

  • Expected as much, what about the Southbound side? there isnt even an ineffective cycle lane there at the moment. Just the bus lane on the other side of the road.

+1, the amount of cyclists who give themselves only 50m to cross 2 lanes of accelerating traffic is scary.

  • Red bus lanes, green cycle lanes, blue super highways... I wanted orange, where do I complain?

  • Purple would have been really cool too.

  • we too think it's idiotic but it's come from above.

always the case isn't it? basically they're just changing the colour and adding extra 'lane'.

I feel for the people who think it's perfectly safe to undertake at speed on a cycle lane, and thus feel that undertaking HGV or any large vehicle is 'safe'.

  • Absolute fucking rubbish.

    yes.

  • People in the office love the mock up of the Truck impeding into the cycle lane. By the way we just implement the scheme, we too think it's idiotic but it's come from above.

Good to know they have a sense of humour at TfL!

for £22million I wanted them to glow in the dark...

  • The cycle lane in those pics didn't look like their promise of at least 1.5m wide......

  • for £22million I want them to glow in the dark.

The fluoro pack would become invisible.

  • ... but little is being done about junctions and major barriers to cycling, like one-way gyratories, for improvements that would really make a difference. Hopefully, more things like this will happen in the next two phases, but it'll be a lot of work.

    this!^

We desperately need to remove needless one way 'systems' (like the one removed at shoreditch ... remember how horrible shoreditch was to be a cyclist or pedestrian before that changed?) and giant roundabout complexes like E&C and the utter fuckup that is Hammersmith ... One way streets should be removed in every case where there is room for two cars, they ruin our city by turning it into racing tracks.

Pissing around with changing the colour of the mostly bad 'cycle ways' is just stuuuupid. the surface seems like its the usual gravelly stuff, that is often poorly laid and not even an attractive surface to cycle on when it is well laid. Furthermore, like VeeVee has attested, drivers seem to think they're mandatory for us, but they can drive in them at will, even when the dividing line is unbroken. So education aimed at drivers about what cyclists' rights/needs are would be really welcomed.

  • The cycle lane in those pics didn't look like their promise of at least 1.5m wide......

the one on Old Street were surprisingly wide, although I don't like cycle lane, the Old Street one were as wide as a motorised vehicle, and that's much better than the narrow one on Clerkenwell Road which the motorist often drives just on the white dotted line without going on the green lane, quite annoying that.

  • What exactly do you want me to add to the issue?

Sorry mate, I was just being sarcastic -- you're not a paid LFGSS (at least not by me!), and your contribution to this forum is immense. Thanks for the comments, the LCC response was very interesting (no sarcasm there, by the way!).

The gravelly stuff will gradually bed in, it's like marbles for the first few days though, until the cars scrub it clear. From the second pic there, it doesn't look like we'll have to wait long.

+1 on getting the gyratories / 1-way systems sorted.

Shinigami - can you comment on the plans for that southbound bit at Oval? Anything groundbreaking or just a winding blue line?

I hope so given there has been atleast two collisions involving cyclists at the Oval tube junction in the past year (one fatal left turn, one cyclist hospitalised by a rlj'ing car).

  • What a load of shit. Clearly mocked up by someone who never actually rides a bike in London. The 'kerbs' as depicted in the Southwark Bridge shot are a fucking moronic idea.

  • The segregating kerbs on Southwark Bridge are already in place, but they are currently obscured by the building works. FWIW their main purpose is to stop vehicles hitting the bridge parapet, which is listed and can't be strengthened enough. That they double as a a cycle track is a pretext. The southern approach to Southwark Bridge and the junction at the north end are much greater priorities, but nothing has been achieved there.

Sorry i'm a bit confused, are you in favour of the segregating curbs or not?
