God knows, it's all over the place.
I'm out. See you in about 7 hours. -

Good news is the BNP have got an absolute kicking and failed miserably in both their target seats and have lost nearly 90% of their deposits, thats a whole load of £££ although still waiting for the results of the local elections. Could be bad news on that front.

Right now, and if my boozed understanding is correct, Labour would have to have all of the remaining votes bar about 10 in order to reach the required majority.

Thank the nonexistant Lord, there is something good to come out of this!

Brighton's gone green!

Brighton will always be pink, what are you on?

Morning all.
So given that the Conservatives have apparently got a massive share of the vote, but no overall majority, might they suddenly realise that they are unelectable in a first past the post system and start talking to Clegg about PR?God knows if you can't win an election when Brown's government is the competition then you've got to start reassessing the situation.
I am quite surprised that the Lib Dems have performed so badly though. I wonder if, given their sudden popularity and the seeming possibility that they might actually gain power people finally looked at their policies and things like their enthusiasm for the Euro and their tax plans put voters off, and they actually lost it on policies?

Unlikely Tories will go for PR, would be a massive u-turn. Waking up to this news I am feeling relieved that the Tories haven't got a majority and slightly smug as I have been predicting a hung Parliament for ages! Even if Cameron does end up PM (as Nick Robinson keeps predicting, but then he is/was a Tory) the lack of a majority will be a good thing for the country.
I think the Lib Dems lost out because people were voting Labour to keep the Tories out. That simple.
-
• #1285
I think I agree. I had wild hopes of Lib Dems forming the official opposition. How wrong was I there?
-
• #1286
Well you weren't the only one.

I know where Milliband lives too. So does Tynan.
I do, I do !
I was once riding past David Milliband's house (in Primrose Hill) with LPG (the famous fixed gear bike rider from London) . . . . a posh little area free from traffic and people so very quite . . . . outside - the usual 2 or 3 'anti-terror' police offices with sub machine guns . . . so LPG decided to start shouting "Allah akbar, Allah akbar !!"
-
• #1288
I imagine Tynan to be older than Miliband.
How dare you.
(He's older than me by the way).
-
• #1289
he looks kind of old, but kind of young, in that young bald guy kind of way.
That's what's on my CV.

The Conservatives have the most to gain from FPTP, even more than Labour.

Morning all.
So given that the Conservatives have apparently got a massive share of the vote, but no overall majority, might they suddenly realise that they are unelectable in a first past the post system and start talking to Clegg about PR?1) They have (as of now) 36% of the vote (hardly "massive share").
2) Under a pure PR system, that would result in 234 seats. They have 286 (again, so far).Clearly SMP/First past the post is not a hindrance to their aims of world domination.
-
• #1292
Disappointed that the Lib Dems didn't do much better, but overall I think the result is not too bad, a hung Parliament might be the best outcome considering the bunch of cunts that make up the Conservative and New Labour parties.
-
• #1293
Agreed. Lab/lib coalition with electoral reform. Ahhhh. Sounds lovely.
Then Canada might fucking wake up and see that even "Westminster" isn't using the "Westminster" electoral system and drop SMP as well.
-
• #1294
Also a bit sad for the LDs. Interesting to read all the posts from last night and see the election "as it happened". (Went to bed early with a can of Guiness and conjunctivitis.)
Going to keep my mouth shut about religion / social conservatism... Unless the Tories form a coalition with the DUP.
-
• #1295
How fucking wrong were those pre-election polls? The Labour loss has been swallowed up by the greedy racists, PR can't be introduced soon enough. All we can hope for is that it'll be a Lib/Lab coalition with PR the condition that will allow Labour to cling onto power for 4 more years.
-
• #1296
Labour might change their leader, team up with the Liberals and form a Government. They have that right if the Conservatives don't have a majority.
I love the fuzzy British constitution.
-
• #1297
I wonder what cabinet position Clegg would get. (assuming he got one)
-
• #1298
I love the fuzzy British constitution.
Not me. Both parties have been trying to claim they get the first chance at forming a government.

The guy on the telly was just saying they got a bigger share of the vote than Tony Blair did in 1997. So how come one results in a Labour landslide, but when it goes the other way it's a hung parliament? I don't get it.
In England the Tories have a massive majority. Given that Scotland is highly overrepresented in parliament (far too many constituencies for the number of people) will questions be asked again about that?
And Poplar and Bethnal Green & Bow are concerned about electoral fraud. What a fucking surprise.

The incumbent party have the first chance. That's how it is apparently.
There is a lot of talk about moral rights now which gets interesting.
They have also been talking on the Beeb about the Queens part. In very extreme circumstances she can choose who wins! Probably only if the whole country was falling apart due to the deadlock.
If by Blears you mean un-focused, redeyed candiadtes named Hazel then no! But still a fair question, in your opinion are the results yet to come in are Lab. constituencies? They seem to be, but I'm perhaps not best placed to judge
