I came out of the chai LATTE place, and there was my bike, gone.

not entirely sure why they locked to that lamp post either, there's loads of bike racks all around there.

Fuck, I left my keys in my lock this morning - mind on other things perhaps as I had to pop to the pharmacy before work, but what a fucking pillock. Only realised when I popped out for a coffee at 11ish and found my keys weren't in my pocket. So, so lucky to not have been taken. My house keys were on the keyring too!

You should always leave a tag on your house keys with your address on so that they can be posted back to you.
;-)

I'd be worried that someone would use the keys to gain access to my house.

I think that's what the winky face is for
-
• #4259
hah, totally missed that.
-
• #4260
I couldn't decide if you'd missed it or were being ironic.
-
• #4261
Ha, he shoots he scores.
-
• #4262
What if they got lost in the post and you had already lost your other set and not got around to getting another set cut?
-
• #4263
Yeah. What then?
Uh, what?
-
• #4264
Put "If found please cut another set of keys and post both sets separately to the same address. Thanks." on the tag too.
Whilst one set may go missing the chances of two sets of keys being lost in the post is very slim indeed.

Winner.

Ooooh. Maybe THAT thread is where I left them.

Any tips for how better to secure a bike stored in these circumstances? @Bezzin has suggested using a more substantial chain lock, although most of what I can find online seem to be too short...
EDIT: Thanks to @Bezzin for this recommendation - looks like a good solution: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/kryptonite-new-york-noose-130cm-chain/

I'd be as concerned about someone unbolting that horizontal support as breaking a lock/chain/cable
-

Agreed, seems easy to walk away without actually cutting anything.
Even with that kit you should use the lock on the bike and the cable round the stand. Then if they cut the cable they still have an immobilized bike.

Looking at the above (and assuming you've got to use that thing):-
At a bare minimum swap the lock/cable arrangement around, e.g. put the lock through the rear wheel and frame and loop the cable around the top bit. That way if someone cuts the easy to cut cable the bike is unrideable as the lock is on it. At the moment it's easy to cut the cable and ride off on the bike.
Locked on the far left like that it looks like a 15mm spanner is all that's needed to undo the bolt and slide the lock off, so it's not looking very secure at all. Maybe using one of the hooks further to the right would prevent something being slid off.
If one lock isn't long enough then use more than one.

Good tips - I have reconfigured. Unfortunately this is all I have to work with, although thankfully this is behind several locked doors...

#badlyparkedbike is developing nicely on twitter at the mo.

Ha! That's excellent!

Thats the worse kind of bike storage I've seen. Would be taking a masonry drill down there and inserting some big bolts into the stone work myself then shackle to that instead.
Oops.
