Ways not to lock your bike

  • tbh I'm not worried about my bike getting stolen but I worry that some cunt will just destroy it when they realise they can't steal it.

    ^^^ This.

Locked my bike next to someone else's. They had the misfortune of locking it on the side facing the pavement. I came back to see their bike having had the wheels kicked in. Rage & sadness. Mine escaped unscathed.

  • I got pissed and left my bike outside Pret a Manger, next to St Martins In The Fields. Not in anyone's way nor nuffink. Someone booted the back wheel in.

  • my girlfriend locked her bike so well outside the Whitechapel gallery today that the theives got pissed off and yanked the bike so hard they nearly snapped and bent the down tube, so turns out even locking your bike well doesn't mean you're safe, scum! A trip to Oak Cycles for a repair is in order.

It is an often overlooked part of locking strategy. I saw a victim of fhe old "twist the whole bike" thing years ago. Was a hefty tubed dirt jump bike and still got fucked. If you put the lock through on of the top tube alone, it almost invites this. Can be done with seat tube only too, fairly easily.

Thieves are reckless, a bike with a bent up tube is still saleable for them.

  • Happened to me. Had to carry the bike from TCR to Liverpool St to get home. Sad times.

  • Someone should go around stealing bike parking that isn't fit for purpose...

  • Lmao that's my university... Such a joke

  • Just saw this on fb

This confuses me a bit. Even if all the spokes were cut the rear wheel would surely still be trapped in the frame, unless the hub was cut too?

  • The lock has probably slid down the rail, and could have been locking without going through the frame.

The rear wheel wouldn't be trapped, only the hub--having cut the spokes, the existence of the wheel as rim, spokes and hub would arguably have ceased. They probably unscrewed the hub from the frame and took it, too.

  • ^^^ [strike]You know there are nuts or a QR on a hub that you loosen to remove the hub from the forks?[/strike]

    That's what he said.

  • almost impossible to see lock - it's a combination lock with a very thin cable - pair of scissors would liberate that!

  • ^ it took me ages to spot it.

  • Looked for it for 5 minutes and gave up. Came back, spotted it in 10 seconds. Its a luggage/rucksack/ski lock

  • Been looking for 3 minutes. Can't find it. Convinced it's a conspiracy.

  • the 'cable' is about 3mm thick

  • That's insane... maybe it's a plant? Any shady men in sunglasses nearby?

  • When there is a whole railing empty with only 1 bike locked to it, why would anyone lock their bike right next to the 1st bike with their front wheel overlapping the back wheel of the 1st bike?

I came out of the supermarket today, saw half of someone's bike locked in front of mine, I moved it out of the way so I could get my bike, the owner jump out from nowhere and got annoyed with me... Well don't lock your bike almost on top of someone else's then!

I do that. Not dry hump their bike with mine, but I park close to someone elses. power in numbers yo!

  • I get it when a spot is usually packed with one too many bikes or during busy periods, but it was early pm and it's a relatively quiet spot as far as bike locking is concerned... and why got annoyed when I merely moved his bike so I could get mine?

  • It's like, a respeck issue innit.

  • I guess so, but it goes both way, if he hadn't locked his bike almost over mine, I wouldn't have had to disrespect him, would I? And for the record, I was going to move it back... I always do...

  • Sounds more like an issue of crazy. Not respect.

  • Are you calling me crazy??
