That claim on the blue plaque needs to be qualified to 'Britain's first Arts Council Funded Black theatre company_'; Black theatre companies were working in the UK from at least the 1880s (OH is a theatre historian working in this area, so I get to read her drafts...).

I think the front was heavily rebuilt but the structure at the back is the same. Pretty sure the roof isn’t actually copper after the first two lots were nicked.
