fuck yeah wine! great thread...
+1 on the Chilean (Chileano is a decent supermarket bottle) but I have to say Campo Viejo Gran Reserva beats it hands down.
What's everyone's opinion of Chateauneuf Du Papé? The Tracy Emin of wine (everyone's got a f*cking opinion on it) mine is, not worth it (bottle at the Oxo is like £65!)

my fave wine is stella artois
Isn't that more of a 'punch' ?

What's everyone's opinion of Chateauneuf Du Papé?Really like, but it's got to be a good one.
I had one for a bout £12 once, and any half decent Bordeaux could have smacked it's overpriced arse. For £20 and above you're looking at a good one, but it still comes down to taste.
I don't buy this wine on a regular basis, because I'm skint.
You can find me scratting around the Bin end shelf or the 3 for £12.
how the mighty have fallen....

£4 is the sweet spot for wine in most cases though, less and people worry it'll blind 'em, above and peeps think they're getting ripped.
what's everyone's opinion on wine clubs? I've had a pretty decent experience with Virgin wines, they have a great intro offer of a case of 12 for 50 dorrah. Also did well with Tesco's for a while but their selection got poor last year.
...anyone wana start a pimp my wine rack thread?

If any of you want to branch out and stop suckling at the Shodbins/Tesco/Virgin teat then drop me a line. I spent 8 years as wine maker in Aus and do a vintage every year in Burgundy while I'm here in London. Our website is here and we do everything from top end investment quality wines through to a cracking house wine for a fiver, and a ton of good mid range stuff in between.
Even if you don't think the expensive stuff is worth it you should at least trade up a bit at the bottom. A wine that sells for €1.10/bt ex cellars ends up on the shelf here at £5.95, whilst one that sells at €1.70 will be £6.95. As it costs about €1 to bottle the stuff (glass, labels, cork, ect) this means the first producer has to cover all their production costs for 10c whilst the second has 70c. Thats a massive difference and there is often (not always..) a big jump in quality because of it.
Under a fiver and most of it's fucking poison that is only good to clean your sink.

£4 is well in the 'cheap and orrible' section....
In England (because of the tax etc) you want to be spending about £10 - £15 for an 'okey' bottle in a supermarket. The same wine in France / most of Europe would be probably be about £5, which would be a lot for what they are used to.
Edit : Or as Gav said above...

nice list. Gav.
if i find myself up that way i will pop in for a bottle (something italian or spanish) -

We have lots of both in the store although I'm an office bitch now so won't be there. My prediliction for sweary outbursts has left me desk bound...

Too young and inexperienced to have a decent nose for wine. Also, HANGOVER OF DEATH.
that's where a wine show will help... certainly the experience part... if you get a hangover then stick to whites or drink water as well

You actually rock up, taste wine and spit it out if you want to look classy....
I love a Chilean Rioja. That's my all time fav combo.
only drivers spit out wine... unless it's not very nice then the rest is poured away.
