Amazon released the source files on the kindle, which is pretty much the same as going 'enjoy your hacking, putos'. I put the screensaver hack on, no probs, then I broke the screen, they replaced it and didn't say shit about the hack.
Tbh the ones the kindle comes with are better than 99% of the ones on the net so I wouldn't recommend it, but it's your kindle.

Good to know!
And I don't mind the Amazon ones, really. Just this one:

Kindle, Kobo, Nook or Sony Reader?
When it come to e-book, I'd look at battery life first.
The Sony Reader last for a claimed two weeks, whether the Kindle/Nook last for a claimed two months (I managed a month with my Kindle sporadically using wireless).
to be honest, looking at the list, it's pretty much a non-brainer, especially with the format it can support.

fuck kindles read paper and ink books.
you don't get old book smells, dog eared pages, finger smudges, margin notes or a bookshelf worth admiring with a computer.

With a kindle I don't have to keep loads of books in my house any more. All of my book collection is either with amazon or stored on my dropbox should my computer break. I'm still in awe at the battery life of the kindle, I've had mine for a while now and not once have I worried about the battery life, it charges really quick too.
I hope that in future all technology is as refined to a job as the kindle is to reading books. Mobile phones for example, give me a modern phone that has a great battery life and I don't think I'd need to upgrade for 10+ years. What I'm trying to say is that the kindle may not sound like a lot but what it does it does really fucking well.

Install calibre on your computer (linux or windows, not sure about mac). Find books from anywhere (try gothenburg) then use calibre to convert them to kindle format and email them to your free kindle account.
Hey, the fuck, presto.

Erm, you could try clicking on "Top 100 Free" in the Kindle store and selecting from that?

thanks that link to the 100 free books on amazon is what i've searched half the internet for. I can't ever see me paying £4.99 for an e book...
-
• #518
You bought a Kindle, why?
-
• #519
Granted, e-book are expensive considering there's nothing needed to be spend on production, papers, distribution, etc. but you still get the same book.

Those servers that Amazon, etc use to host these books 24/7 aren't powered by love and the cooling they require isn't provided by evaporating angel tears. Nothing is 'free'.
The price will drop as the competition forces it to, not before.

Oh don't forget the free internet connection worldwide too, that make it worthwhile too.

jv before you give up on the Kindle can I point you to www.instapaper.com - It's basically a 'read it later' service for the web. I have mentioned it before on this thread. So for example you see a nice big article, post or book online but can't read it just then. You just clip it to instapaper, allowing you to come back to it later. It supports the Kindle by emailing a digest of all your day's clipping to your Kindle. (You can also do a single post, that entirely up to you.) I have instapaper'ed The Alchemist as an example here is the link : The Alchemist
You can have a Kindle and basically not buy any ebooks from Amazon if you so desire, just used Calibre and Instapaper and you should be fine.

I don't quite understand, you brought a kindle so you can read books, but don't want to pay for them?
I mean, what did you do when you used the ol' paper book?
Does it void the warranty? I imagine it would. And with e-ink, whatever is on the screen when the kindle goes, is what stays on the screen. So if you, let's say, crack the screen while it's in your bag, and send it back to them, they may be reluctant to ship you out a new one?
That being said, Amazon should make it an option! It shouldn't have to be hacked.
