The no lighted case will probably come back on the Market.
There was an issue with it in that it was causing a glitch with the kindle, something amazon knew about and when my girlfriend called them about it, they refunded her the cost of the case and sent her a voucher for the difference up to the lit case, this was a couple of weeks ago and they almost immediately withdrawn from the Market.
Inreckoj they are working out what was wrong and will re release it when they have it sorted.

I had heard something about that- I have the non-lit case, and my Kindle has required a reboot 2 or 3 times.
In terms of total operating time though that's far far less than my Nexus 1 phone, so I didn't really worry about it.

Hmm, my Kindle in non lit case has started randomly rebooting when I flick the swicth to wake from standby - could it be the case then?
-
• #405
I believe so, give amazon a call, you may end up with a refund for the case an a credit so you can buy the lit one at no extra cost!
Although they may have become more stringent now!
eBay prices for the non lot cases are pretty mug at new prices now as amazon have stopped selling them.

sent them an email, see what they say

how can a case effect electronics??
-
• #408
The wireless perhaps.

Yeah that had me wondering too. The only other thing would be heating in some odd way. But the Kindle hardly gets that warm anyway. I'm even happier I went with my tenner case solution.

Maybe the metal clips are shorting something? shrug

I've got a lit case. It was essential in the sense that: 1) an unprotected kindle I had smashed when it fell off the arm of a couch 2) I didn't have a light in the bedroom I could use to read at night. It was expensive. Can't disagree with that.

Does anybody have issues with typos in ebooks? So far the 2 books I have bought/read have at least one typo per page. More like substituted letters etc. It's like they have used OCR to input the original paper manuscript. Surely that cant be the case (books were first published only a few years ago)

Re: Kindle reboots... I've upgraded to the latest beta firmware available (don't have it with me so can't quote number) and the reboots / lockups have stopped.
Re: typo's ... not in books I've bought, but some have had weird formatting, like they just took the word doc and just saved it as an ebook.

That's funny, I updated firmware and that's when reboots started to occur!
yes! plenty of typos and weird formatting

my dad won a Wifi kindle in a raffle at Old Trafford the other day.

At least the typos are not unique to the trashy sci fi I'm reading then... Is annoying that they wont put the same effort into publishing an ebook as a paper edition when you pay nearly the same. Oh well, no biggie. Still one of the best gadgets I've ever had.

i am finally getting one. If i find a site like this? http://www.dagonbytes.com/thelibrary/lovecraft/
can i just download the stories onto the kindle and read them?
-
• #421
yup you can use non-encrypted formats on the kindle. Use Calibre if you want to have them cleaned up
-
• #422
The typos & formatting errors give me the dry itch.
run a virus scan, sounds like you have epub-ic lice

Went down to John Lewis and picked one up at lunch, with the rip off lighted case.
Instapaper integration is nice. PDF I was reading is ok in portrait, but in landscape it's much better. Might run it through Calibre or crop off the margins.
Looking forward to putting it through it's paces.

Does calibre crop margins off PDFs automatically? Whoa. That would be nice.
-
• #425
Not sure, but I was going to use Acrobat to trim the margins
The case with light is not an essential purchase.
