I'm loving my new Kindle. Have too much clutter in my life and too many attention seeking devices bleeping away at me all day - I know I would just never read any books on an iPad with all the other distracting things I could do with it. In its simplicity and because it's also so dinky and easy to use - I think it's kind of retro, in a good way. The e-ink is pretty neat too. Once you've exhausted all the free stuff (I've od-ed on Hardy, Austen and Dickens) it could become an expensive addiction...hopefull prices will drop yet.

Good point on device such as the iPad, I find it's hard to read books on my iPhone because the internet is a couple of button away.
I love the Kindle simply for that reason - designed as a book reader, like the original iPod that were simply design to play music only (even Steve Job said that despite the newer one having the option of uploading picture).

New Kindle update.
Amazon.com Help: Kindle Software Update Latest Generation
Academics rejoice! Amazon is adding real page numbers! (this has prevented me from buying a number of books for the kindle, and forced me to get their pulpy brethren).

Kindle is excellent. My girlfriend bought me one for my birthday... after many not so subtle hints. But it is truly a very good thing. Being somewhat transient and not wanting to accumulate loads of books it means I read more books again, without filling up my tiny bookshelf.
The book pricing is a bit hard to swallow, but at least you can sample books in your own time before you buy and hopefully it means Authors still get a decent cut. And the 3g connection is a brilliant inclusion, I would go as far as saying it's 'killer' feature.

Do you know if you have to use the WiFi for this... it seems to imply that you do in the email I got.

I did it manually, so not sure. The update was 22 meg, though, so quite possibly...

instapaper is ace! I've got the free version on my iphone and it saves me from boredom every now and again. Anything lengthy to read online i just add to it and read later on, works a treat

Fucking links, how does that work?
They use magnets.

Can we in the UK download ebooks from US stores?
-
• #394
in case anyone is interested, I just bought a book which was only available in the US (ie not through amazon.co.uk or even in europe via amazon.com)
just added the address of a Hotel in New York to my account, fired up the amazon store on the kindle, paid in dollars using my usual 1-click card thingy, book arrived seconds later.
I have since changed my address back.
seemed to work perfectly, dunno if there could be any comeback, presumably they cannot deauthorise a book because you appear to be in a different country..

I think I want a kindle. £111 is ok but the lighted case which seems like an essential purchase is £50, almost half the price of the kindle itself, which is making me feel as if I'm being ripped off...
Gah I'll probably pull the trigger on it...

How often do you read in low light conditions?

In another word; how did you managed to read books before the Kindle?
r.e. books worth reading; Culture of Fear.
