Kindles. What to buy? Not having used one ever. Seen the paper white, original? and the one with a keyboard.which one is considered best?

Paper white, otherwise you need a light to read with.

The others do the job fine but the paperwhite is the nicest. Screen quality is slightly better and the touchscreen is more convenient when inputting text for searching, etc.
I found the standard one fine for the time I owned it but ended up buying a paperwhite as I fly a lot and wanted the backlight. Depends how much you value the extra £50.

Paper white bought, not sure if I'll ever get used to this. Just find it a bit weird.

Give it ten days and you won't realise you are doing it. Then you'll be bored somewhere and realise that you can read the book on your phone and it syncs up. Then you'll buy a new book whilst on the move or during the middle of the night.
And you'll be hooked.

I would say so.
I am reading a paper book, written by a friend of mine. So frustrating that i have to carry the bulky thing and can't look up word definitions. Grrrr.

Just buy a Kindle.
They barely change between releases (being just reading devices) and they're good for a few years at minimum (multiple releases of newer models). They also tend to release new models September > October to build up for being a Christmas best seller.
The existing Kindle Paperwhite is awesome. And it is worth getting the 3g one as it makes buying new books when you're done reading one a breeze... or just for changing your mind and buying something interesting when you realise whatever you already have is inappropriate (heavy physics books for holiday lounging).
Just buy one already, no need to wait at all.
The Kindle's advantage isn't a bit of tech (though theirs is exceptionally good), it's the Kindle Store and the range and availability therein, finding whatever you want in an instant.
Which is why the Kindle still beats the others... there's a tech advantage, but it's the distribution and deals that make it win.

the one feature i'd like to see (but never will) is the ability to upload your own books to cloud storage so they're available through all kindle apps.
sucks when I'm in the middle of a book not from the kindle store and I want to read it on my phone as i don't have my kindle with me but can only see the ones i've paid amazon for.
obvious reasons why this will never happen are obvious.

Use Calibre. It offers some of that functionality.

i do. but it means syncing all of my devices through that which is a PITA

If you email documents to your kindle email address (either .mobi or .azw) then you can download them onto any of your devices and they'll sync to furthest read (assuming you have connectivity). You only need to email it to one of your devices and it will appear in the cloud/archive for the rest.
I have two kindles and the android phone app and use this between the three. One thing to note is that it doesn't work with the PC app.
I use Calibre to convert/email as I find it easiest once it's set up but there's no need to do that, you can just send files from any email account.
Once you get the hang of it it's pretty easy, I'm somewhat surprised that Amazon offer that functionality as it makes it a lot easier to use non-Amazon books.
Personally, for the extra price, I wouldn't bother with the 3G paperwhite. I tend to have my Kindle loaded up with a load of books (you can get upwards of 1,000 on there) and, if I'm really desperate then there's generally wireless somewhere you can connect to.
And on another note, something I asked on the books thread:
Given that Amazon are flexing their muscles again (this time with Hachette) I think I'd like to occasionally start buying ebooks from places in addition to Amazon to, in a small way, chip away at their monopoly.
Any suggestions on other sites to buy ebooks from? I'm happy with converting, etc so don't have to be mobi/azw

how does one get a bibliotik account?
-
• #1095
Good question, I'm not sure. I also don't have invites.
There must be others like it though.
And for people wondering... think Pirate Bay for books, but a curated collection ensuring few flaws in the books.

I was thinking more in terms of buying books such as the Baen store http://www.baenebooks.com/

Is it possible to link an existing kindle with a new amazon account and keep all the books on it or will they disappear?
-
• #1099
Back everything up with Calibre first. You may need to break the DRM.
-
• #1100
the books are tied to the account and drm will enforce it. so if you register the kindle to a new account the books will stop working.
You can zoom without it being jail broken, but they're set zoom levels. Which is absolutely moronic. I'd need new software, I guess. There is a replace OS from China, which apparently does it... Any tried it?
