  • I have to say that I have become slightly obsessed with Scandinavian furniture of late.

I think I've found my inner Viking.

  • aren't those Pistis Corimas?

  • Ethanol is all well and good until everyone starts to want it. Then we become royally fucked.

I already want ethanol. A nice pint of Guinness should do it.

On a more serious note, I'm pretty optimistic about the future of energy. People on their own will do nothing - there's no incentive to, because the damage will happen years after their death, or in poor countries thousands of miles away - but scientists are working on it.

Solar, wind, geothermal - all these things are improving fast. I've also toured a fusion plant, and the money being pumped into that is phenomenal (perhaps it should be higher, but that's another thing).

Things will get a lot worse before they get better, but they will get better.

Controversially, for things to get better there also needs to be less people on the planet. Technology is great, but it basically allows us to breed and spread more than we really should.

There was an interesting discussion on this in a recent BBC statistics podcast - an economist was theorising that technology allows more of us to exist, to the point that it doesn't, then we're miserable. Think food production, water supply, etc. Essentially, in this way, technology is a tool to increase the sum of human suffering.

I don't agree, and neither does he if you hear his whole argument, but it's an interesting point.

But how do you get people to stop having so many kids? Kids are nice, after all - I plan to have some one day. Who knows? Not me.

    Train of thought rant over.

  • Well in gb you get some free.

**Biodiesel : **Biodiesel does not appear to have been recognised as a form of fuel until Budget 2002. The rate of excise duty for biodiesel is £0.20 per litre less than the rate of duty for Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD). In Budget 2008 it was announced that the current duty differential of £0.20 per litre for biofuels for road use will cease from 2010. Duty thereafter will be charged at the same rate as main road fuels.

Yeah, and we had to put up with seeing all that rubbish last night!! The only thing good about it was that we can hide a stash in one of them!

  • Name one South African designer that I'd have heard of.

  • Ah yes, but this is, in part, because the claims of the 70's weren't followed through on. We haven't obeyed the requirement of smaller cars for this model to work.

Do you mean the requirement that all/most large cars get replaced by smaller cars?

Interestingly enough it looks like we might be about to enter an era of micro-commuting. People using smaller, lower occupancy cars for commuting to escape congestion at it's most prevalent time.

That's a big part of the problem--making that more acceptable. Using lots and lots of smaller units is only likely to cause more congestion. They'll still be much too fast, isolate people too much, keep them inactive, etc.

Bear in mind that owning cars doesn't increase congestion or oil dependancy, it's having them on the road.

Arguably, producing lots of things that then get used too little is a good deal more pointless. Already in London, cars just sit around doing nothing most of the time. Car clubs are a good thing as their cars actually get used--often (although of course not all the time) for useful trips. Citygent knows more about that.
